My little girl (2 and a bit ) has had an ear infection ...

I have been giving her medicine for 7 days now( 4mls 3 times a day) ,I know she is better :)

As I am no medic , this is purely on my feelings .

I know the "you must finnish the course ,for it to work "

But ...what do you all think ?

thinkingkindly this is exactly what I was basing it on ...I knew that it wasn't something so outlandish ...but I wanted opinions .

Thank you ladies .

There we have it then, thinkingkindly has a friend who is a doctor who once said it was ok. You have your answer.

The rest of us have probably NEVER asked a doctor the very same question, and we just assume it is not possible.

thinkingkindly · 31/03/2011 19:35

A good GP wouldn't mind being asked about this, I am sure, if you want to double check. Smile

valiumredhead · 31/03/2011 19:39

You MUST finish the course, or risk a secondary infection.

doley · 31/03/2011 19:41

I am grateful for todays advice .

I am a very responsible Mum though ~my boys were only ever prescribed a course of 7 days in the UK ,I just wondered ...

thinkingkindly `Thank you again .

Oh ,and I just gave her her medicine ...you can all relax now Grin

I would always check with our Doctor ,but ...as most of us are Mums thought I would ask and check the general feeling .

OP posts:
QuintessentialShadows · 31/03/2011 19:42

lol, I think you have the general feeling. Grin

Salmotrutta · 31/03/2011 19:42

A good GP doesn't just dish out 10 days of antibiotics for nothing either thinkingkindly.

Sorry, but the OP must finish the course - it's highly unlikely her Doctor plucked 10 days out of the air.

Please don't confuse the whole issue by going against well-established medical advice.

valiumredhead · 31/03/2011 19:45

When I lived in Greece - 10 days was the norm for anti b's.

femalevictormeldrew · 31/03/2011 20:36

Not finishing the course is about the worst thing you could do with antibiotics. YABU

supersewer · 31/03/2011 20:38

why bother starting if you are not planning to see it through - my dd (and I) are on them 4 times a day - PIA but it would be nice to be well again.

considering how difficult it is to get them these days, presumably they must be needed.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 31/03/2011 20:42

"I keep thinking of all the unhealthy things antibiotics can mess with in a delicate young thing !"

If you're worried about her digestive system, give her some bio yoghurt to boost the good bacteria.

She must finish the course - no doubt about that.

doley · 31/03/2011 20:44

supersewerplease see my previous posts :) for the up to dated situation !

I am in the US ~getting antibiotics here is easy peasy lol !

I hope you get better soon ...

Some of you are so unbelievably mean and insulting. There is no need for terms like stupidity, idiotic and insane. I can hardly believe it.

doley · 31/03/2011 20:51

2sons1hubby faceless freedom isn't it ?

I wonder what would happen if I asked the exact same question in the park ?

I have a very tough skin ...even if it is a bit too natural Grin

Different areas tend to have slight differences in antibiotic guidance. A big part of this is down to variation in patterns of resistance/ sensitivity of bacteria in each area. I don't have any personal experience of American formularies but I agree that an antibiotic course shouldn't be stopped without consulting a dr.

As aimingforserenity symptoms will go when bacterial load falls below a certain level but could flare up again if the levels are allowed to increase which stopping antibiotics could do. It also helps increase antibiotic resistance and potentially speeds up the spread of 'superbugs'

Glad your dd is feeling better and glad you're giving her bio yoghurt.

Just in case anyone wonders I would give the same answer in a face to face situation and in fact have done.

doley · 31/03/2011 21:11

xstitch Thanks :)

You have been very helpful & nice ...

All those bossy boots should take note lol !

Well, I was prescribed 500mg (only ever take 250 before)- I took it for many days though it made me feel sick and dizzy. So for the last few days, I halved my dose. I am OK (so far)

TattyDevine · 31/03/2011 21:42

I know you are continuing so I'm preaching to the converted but I'll just bore you with my anecdote Smile

I had pneumonia in December/Jan. Had Amoxycillin, did nothing. Had something different (can't remember the name, but one a day, and bitter taste). Did a bit. Then a 3rd course of a 3 a day (no idea of the name).

Thought I was over it then - bear in mind i finished each course.

On 1st Feb I bragged to Husband that February was our month, after a terrible Xmas/new year and jan.

On 12th Feb I woke in the night, shivering and aching, and twinging. Thought I had the flu.

Turns out it was the infection returning - I hadn't really "coughed it up" and it had re-grown...

2 courses of Tetracycline (14 days, 4 a day) and I thought I was just about there. Finishe them nearly a month ago.

Only last Sunday, did the "infection" bit left raise up from my lungs to my trachea and be able to be coughed up. I am still coughing up green - the virus that ruined Xmas, hopefuly will be gone in time for Easter.

Yep - so keep those antiboitics - simply because there are some nasty bugs out there this winter. Nothing wrong with me - just unlucky. Dont let your DD be unlucky too.

xstitch · 31/03/2011 21:45

Is it amoxicillin figcake? If so 250mg was the dose calculated for all but the worst infections when amoxicillin was first used. With in use monitoring and ongoing research a pattern is emerging to show that in adults the 500mg dose is now needed for adults due to resistance etc. Its unfortunate that antibiotics can have unpleasant side effects like that.

figcake · 31/03/2011 21:48

yup - although it was The Infection Revisited (I basically took the 250 mg for half the course the first time around and could still feel the bloody thing in my throat when I abandoned the course so it was only a matter of time.
