This is written on a friends facebook...

wtf, there is a breastfeeding doll out for kids. that is just sooo wrong!!
followed by many comments in agreement, and lots of let kids be kids

Said friends daughter is bridesmaid at a wedding I am attending this weekend. I've never felt uncomfortable feeding DS before, but this comment is now making me feel very awkward.
Plus I'm just in complete shock that I have a friend who thinks like this.

I'm at a loss how people are so offended by this.

So it is OK for young girls to pretend feed babies with a bottle, but not to pretend to BF that same doll!!

Kind of sums up where we are in society where X% of the population see BF as some kind of sexual thing - freaking weirdos!!! How many people who actually do BF (or want to BF) see it as a sexual thing? No one I know of & certainly not me.

HipHop - lots of people are not at all OFFENDED - kids have always copied BFing their dolls etc, and should carry on doing so without the need for a doll which pretends it is latched onto them and makes a noise - thats one step too far IMO

MollieO · 01/04/2011 12:38

I heard an article about this on the radio today. I got the impression it was a doll for use by school aged children in the same way as they have the ones they bring home from school to look after. I bf but I was Hmm at this.

I find it odd that there is a need to have a doll that particularly breastfeeds, why can't any doll be breast fed in pretend play? Mind you, I am not keen on alot of this dolls that do this, do that, we are not allowing children to use there own imaginations by giving them everything everything to hand. I ws more than happy to make the noise of a crying baby when playing with my dolls ect and didn't need a doll that made the noise to add to the enjoyment.

Flowerpotmummy, thanks.

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 01/04/2011 13:32

I am totally pro BF...but.....I think a BF doll is just wierd and gross, sorry!!! I think it is the same as these bras you get for young girls who just dont need them.........agree with the fb comments, just let kids be kids - there's plenty of time for them to learn about BF/birds and bees etc etc.

As flowerpot says - Ick

NoWayNoHow · 01/04/2011 13:40

desperate I'm in total agreement with you - selling this doll is the equivalent of selling pretend sanitary pads. Both perfectly natural, but are they really things that LO with no boobs or working wombs need to have in their lives?

No child spontaneously role plays BF unless they are copying an adult they've seen. It's not something that comes from within - it's imitation. If they do, however, choose to copy mummy/auntie/mummy's friend then let them do it with the dolls they already own.

Making one that is fit for this purpose only is targeting kids far too young.

grovel · 01/04/2011 13:41

I agree with lazylula. Let's leave something for pretend play. If we are determined to be realistic then let's at least be honest. Dolls should all come with a pile of dirty laundry.

sweetkitty · 01/04/2011 13:44

Don't see anything wrong with it TBH. A BREASTFEEDING pretend baby whatever will they think of next Hmm

Our breasts are meant for men surely anyway? (or so the DM thinks)

Personally I find the bride and groom baby born dolls way more freaky.
