I was going to buy some small snacks for the family lunchboxes. I lent the last of my money to my son who works about three miles away so he didnt have to walk thinking I could quite easily knock up some cakes instead. It did make me chuckle but I am now having to bake on my one day off when I could have been watching telly doing other chores.

he wants the money for something else, all children do this!

grovel · 30/03/2011 11:16

Well, he's been dishonest but I'm sure that he would justify itself to himself along the lines of "Mum thought the bus fare was reasonable so if I can be arsed to walk 3 miles I deserve to spend the money on chips/chocolates/lager".

redfairy · 30/03/2011 11:18

He's 21 and has ran out of ciggies. I know exactly what it's going on. Smile
I just thought as rain was forecast it might save him arriving wet and cold. I hope it buckets down on him at 5pm now.

Are you asking for the cash back since you said you lent it to him? If so then its up to him what he does with the money. If not then you should definitely do so.

knittedbreast · 30/03/2011 11:24

21! i thought younger! this happens in our family all the time, the money is never asked for back though even if it is lent

grovel · 30/03/2011 11:25

A word of caution - what you and I may smile about could go down badly with an employer. If, say, he was paid to deliver a car and given money for a train home he should not assume that the employer would be happy if he hitched back and pocketed the money. You might want to mention this to him.

grovel · 30/03/2011 11:27

Oh - "borrowed". Missed that. I should be less sanctimonious.

redfairy · 30/03/2011 11:28

I think Judge Judy might say we entered into a contract whereby the loan was conditional on him spending it on bus fare and by walking to work he has broken the contract. That said he is basically a good boy and I know the money will come back tomorrow (with all his other subs) this month. It's his first month in a new job. His paydates have changed so I do not begrudge any help...in fact I quite admire his duplicity!

I agree - the money was lent to be used for the bus - not to drink/ smoke or eat. Therefore.....he is in the wrong. But no biggy here - just a little crafty and bit annoying for the OP no doubt!

HecateTheCrone · 30/03/2011 11:42

Why couldn't he just be honest with you and borrow some money for fags?

You know, you could have charged him interest Wink it's a good life lesson.

redfairy · 30/03/2011 11:42

Whatsall...it really just makes me laugh that even though he's all grown he's too scared to ask me for a loan for cigarettes. He knows he will get the usual lecture...dying early, equivalent of reducing your salary by a few thousand each year etc...
He has said that he is going to give up now the Chancellor has put up tobacco by 50p per packet so here's hoping. Maybe then he will be able to afford a yearly bus pass.

Maybe he missed the bus?

redfairy · 30/03/2011 11:47

Nah! I know his game...
I'm making rock cakes. He hates currants- we all love them Grin
