To be cross that DS not allowed to eat yogurt at break-time

DS1's school have a healthy eating policy for breaktime and children are only allowed to have fruit and water/milk. This morning we had no fresh fruit to send in for break and instead sent in a yogurt as I quite obviously didn't want him being hungry - lunchtime is not until 12pm. We were also late this morning so I didn't get a chance to explain this to his teacher or classroom assistant. When I collected him from school he told me that the classroom assistant did not allow him to eat the yogurt and told him to put it back in his bag until lunchtime. I asked if the assistant asked him if he had anything else to eat and he said that she did and he told her no. Therefore he went hungry. He is 5yrs old and in P1.
I am so mad at the classroom assistant and feel like making a complaint to the head teacher Angry. I completely agree with the fruit and water/milk at breaktime but not to the extent that it policed so rigerously. WTF did she think would happen; the whole class erupt into anarchy?!?
Am I being unreasonable?

true, :)tougholdgirl/...earlier posts just said how unhealthy yoghurts were so was refering to that, and i can see the point of mess, but if it was the only snacky thing she had to hand bearing in mind she was late, it was better than grabbbing crisps, etc

BabbyEdensMummy · 29/03/2011 21:46

*oops, tougholdbird

Driftwood999 · 29/03/2011 21:47

OP - lots of sensible suggestions here, hope you take them on board. Rules do need to be kept, otherwise it undermines the whole ethos and that erodes respect. Think also of the staff looking after not just your child but other too, and the message "exceptions" would give to others. It does not harm anyone, even a child, to do without for a short term. Resolve to do better.

Or carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, sweetcorn etc. Even some corn flakes in a tupperware

Ok, if you all have children that would willingly eat this as a snack at school then i hold my hands up and admit to bad parenting.
My 3 DCs are all keen and capable cooks, who enjoy a wide range of foods, but any of the above in a school lunchbox would have brought teasing from their peers and the food in the bin! A tub full of sweetcorn? i have DD2 who hoovers up sweetcorn in wraps and stir fries like there's no tomorrow, but in a lunch box at Primary school?? Easier to make a "Kick me" label and stick it on her back!
She's now a trim teen, size 10-12, who rides, plays polo-cross and kick boxes, but who ate ....shock, horror....crisps sometimes!!!!!

tougholdbird · 29/03/2011 21:50

Driftwood are you a teacher? If not, you should be. You have The Voice Of Authority.

thisisyesterday · 29/03/2011 21:53

ds1 regularly eats those things at school in his packed lunch

MrsRhettButler · 29/03/2011 21:56

omg my dd loves her peppers/olives/cherry toms/whatever in her little tupperware box and no one tries to kick her

dementedma · 29/03/2011 21:58

wow. well done you on producing such a healthy eater.
I presume he's not at school in an inner city environment then? Grin
I well remember all the DCs bringing friends round for dinner and them being baffled at things like courgettes, peppers and spaghetti that didn't come in a tin!

hocuspontas · 29/03/2011 21:59

lol demented! Those are some of the foods from the school fruit and veg scheme! (Not the cornflakes obviously Grin). We also get sugar snap peas, peas in the pod and mange tout - the look of bewilderment on some of the children's faces is brilliant!

Driftwood999 · 29/03/2011 21:59

tougholdbird - I'm not a teacher as it happens, but a tougholdbird (life experience?) like yourself, and please take that as a compliment!

i live in bristol so yes inner city!

i dont think i made her that way but she just loves food, she'll eat anything and some of them really weird... she takes after her dad

she's only in reception but shes not the sort to worry what people think (something else i didn't teach her) she tells other kids they should try everything once! like i said, weird child

nenevomito · 29/03/2011 22:08

really? My DD would eat blueberries at every meal if she could. We had to have a break from them as it turned everything that came out a very interesting green (she's in nappies, I'm not a weird toilet watcher).

MrsRhettButler · 29/03/2011 22:08

whats wrong with blueberries? Shock a handful each?

bloody hell, theyre expensive, i wish someone would give me free blueberries Grin
