to expect the nursery to treat the Royal Wedding bank holiday like all the others?

Have just found out our nursery is not giving staff time off for the Royal Wedding bank holiday and is charging parents even though the schools and businesses are all having the day off. Is any one else finding this or is it just my nursery?

My preschool isn't charging for the day. Just had next term's bill through and definitely not being charged for the two May Monday Bank Holidays and the Wedding Friday. There was a specific deduction made if you attended Mon/Fri.

No, YANBU. Our nursery asked parents what they wanted, if enough people needed childcare that day they would have opened. Fortunately very few people needed it so they will be closed.
I was not pleased to hear that if they had been open, then I would have been billed for that day (as would have kept DS off as DH would have been off, I'm S/E) and I would have had words - it is a bank holiday, and we shouldn't be paying for it!

YANBU. It's a bank holiday, and if I worked there I would be moaning my ass off!

Suppose it depends on the needs of the majority of parents. For example if lot of parents are NHS/Emergency Services or ?retail (not sure what shops doing) they will be working as usual and may need childcare

It's up to employers to decide if they are closing for a holiday or not. If they have enough customers, I don't blame them for staying open.

my nursery is doing the same thing, they are making us work, they say that our contracts state we are entitled to 'normal bank holiday'

bigbeagleeyes · 29/03/2011 20:32

Highland Council are not recognising the holiday so it will just be another day. Schools are also open, they said it would cost too much money!

poopnscoop · 29/03/2011 20:38

I bet most work places will have the TV on anyway, watching the wedding.

YANBU I'm sure that by law this has to be treated like any other bank holiday.

kitkat1000 · 29/03/2011 20:49

our nursery charges for bank holidays!!! The fees are averaged per month inclusive of b/h and the fact they close xmas eve til after ny! I presumed thats fair as they have to pay salaries to staff etc. I think they should still charge but then stay open for it!

gizzy1973 · 29/03/2011 20:50

Its not technically a bank holiday and i know my dh is working that day as his firm arent giving the day off to staff

kitkat1000 · 29/03/2011 20:51

they are also charging for the wedding and stay open and i think thats right tbh as it not one of the statutory days you are paid for in your contract

supersewer · 29/03/2011 20:52

at our place kids are off, so I don't get paid!!!

Changechangechangeagain · 29/03/2011 20:52

Actually it is not a bank holiday like all others.

Many people are not eligible legally for the off. If your contract of employment (or with a nursery for example) says you are entitled to xx days bank holiday or lists them then you are not entitled. If it just says bank holidays then you are.

jumpyjan · 29/03/2011 21:02

Our nursery is opening as normal. The kids are going to have a Royal Wedding party and get all dressed up. I am going to have a day to myself Smile I think they did a quick survey and most the parents were required to work the day so they decided to open.
