Ok so there are 5 students but what if one needs the bathroom?

FlorenceCalamityandJoanofArc · 29/03/2011 10:16

then there is another one. Whats the problem?

kreecherlivesupstairs · 29/03/2011 10:16

My DH is a teacher, there are never less than two invigilators even if it is one child doing the exam.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 29/03/2011 10:17

Maybe I missed the point. I took it to mean a student needing to pee rather than an adult. surely an adult would go before the exam started, unless it was laydeez problems that started out of the blue.

FabbyChic · 29/03/2011 10:19

I thought students were not allowed to pee during an exam, I'd be surprised if they couldn't hold it.

creaseistheword · 29/03/2011 10:20

No, the student

5 students,, 1 invigilator

what if a student needs to pee?

I used to invigilate exams at my son's High school, and we always had two invigilators in exams, as far as I am aware. If a student needs to go to the toilet, he or she must be escorted there and back, to avoid charges of cheating - so you have to have two people available. I suppose this could mean one invigilator, with a phone to summon someone from the office to escort a candidate to the loo if neccessary.

CheeseEnforcementAgency · 29/03/2011 10:22

We weren't allowed to leave during exams unless we had medical reasons( Inc periods). I don't think 3 hours is long.

creaseistheword · 29/03/2011 10:23

Ours are allowed to go

STress alone makes then want to wee more, not to menion the water bottles by the desks

nannyl · 29/03/2011 10:23

i dont remember myself or anyone else leaving the exam to pee for GCSE's, A Levels, or Uni exams.

The only person who ever left any exam room i was in, was so ill, he was sent to hospital with suspected meningitus (which he didnt have).

At that age, sorry but you go before exam, or wait until the end, even for 3 hour exams!

FabbyChic · 29/03/2011 10:23

You go before you have the exam, you drink less because you are having an exam.

So far as I know you cannot leave an examination room.

PoledrathePissedOffFairy · 29/03/2011 10:24

Whenever I invigilated university exams, there were two invigilators, preferably one male and one female. We did escort students to the toilet, and checked the cubicle first, and remained outside the door at all times, listening for any paper-rustling (other than loo paper Grin). I would think that's even more important in these days of mobile internet devices.

I do remember one exam where a student approached me at the beginning to give me a GP letter confirming she had a urine infection, so would probably need to go to the loo at lot during the exam. Poor girl must have gone about 5 times in a 3 hour exam!

creaseistheword · 29/03/2011 10:24

We do allow people to go to the bathroom here (uni)

I used to invigilate exams and often it was just me for the smaller numbers of students. I even did the evening exams in a big dark college sat with electricians doing their 17th edition.

I had a walkie talkie and could contact someone if we needed assistance e.g. someone required a wee break. This only was used once and it was for a guy who had medical issues and had a very weak bladder. After the first exam he took, we organised it that someone came in every 30 mins to see if he wanted a loo break ( he usually did). And he sat towards the back near the door so he didn't disturb others.

creaseistheword · 29/03/2011 10:27

Im just praying none of this lot need a wee

Theres always at least 2 invigilators present at my exams. There could be up to 50 (taking the exam) in the room. Loads of people get up to use the toilet - and an invigilator accompanies them (Grin). I think it would be quite sick to deny any person the use of a toilet to be honest.

Also, I sat exams at 38 weeks pregnant (Jan 2010) and then at 17 weeks pregnant (Dec 2010) and will again in May (when Ill hopefully be 36 weeks pregnant). I could easy go 3 times within the 3 hours.

creaseistheword · 29/03/2011 10:31

My usual exam (my own module) is s 3 hr essay exam. I have 65 students and there are usually 2 of us and quite a few toilet trips.

Im really shocked to read that people are supposed to just hold it unless they have a diagnosed medical problem Shock My God! pregnant or not, I wouldnt have anyone tell me I couldnt go to the toilet Shock (and I would make a serious complaint if one of my children were "not allowed" go to the toilet at school)

tibni · 29/03/2011 10:34

ICE regulations state 1 invigilator is all that has to be provided with a small group (under 14 springs to mind). In the school I work in there is always 2 adults - sometimes invigilators, sometimes 1 invigilator and 1 TA. Toilet breaks, sickness breaks are sometimes unavoidable. In the summer I will have a candidate on her due date and my line manager has suggested I bring my own towels!!!

I run the additional needs exams and tend to spend exam times dashing between rooms and dealing with any behavioual issues.

Some schools use walkie talkie systems to bypass 2 adults. As examinations conditions are maintained there should not be an issue with toilet breaks - my exception is 30min modules where there would have to be a very good reason.

StayingDavidTennantsGirl · 29/03/2011 10:37

Fabby - having invigilated GCSEs and A levels, I can confirm absolutely that a candidate is allowed to leave the examination room to go to the toilet, but must be escorted. I have escorted candidates to the loo a couple of times - though it doesn't happen very often in my experience - I suspect candidates don't want to take any time away from the paper as they feel then need all the time they have.

callow · 29/03/2011 10:43

I have been involved in invigilating exams in a secondary school.

Sometimes I have just had one student. This has been when the student broke his arm the day before and couldn't write. Other times it has been when a dyslexic student is able to have a scribe (my hand never hurt as much during the A levels exams). In all these cases it is just me and the student in a room as obviously they are telling me the answers. We always had walkie talkies for contact or another invigilator sitting outside a group of rooms.

We did have one very volatile and manipulative student. He always had 2 invigilators (one to scribe and one to watch), mainly to protect ourselves from any accusations.

littleducks · 29/03/2011 10:58

When I was at school you werent really allowed breaks, but this has changed now, I am at uni and we are allowed to go to the toilet if necessary, we arent normally keen as it does mean less writing time but it is good to know you can if need be, more relaxing somehow.

JaneS · 29/03/2011 11:03

Depends on the exam set-up. I only had one invigilator at my finals exams, because I did them on computer and there were only a few of us in the room. It was fine. Btw, my longest exam was nearly four and a half hours, and I didn't get a pee break - ow! Grin Shock

I think it is a bit tough on students at GCSE/ A-Level not to get to go to the loo if they need to - it's really stressful and GCSE students are only 15/6, stress and hormones together is tough.
