To be sick of the bank staff doing this?

I work freelance, so my bank account goes up and down like a yoyo during the year. After a biggish project it can have quite a bit of money in it for several weeks until I get the time to spend it in a frenzy pay the bills or invest it sensibly.

About 3 years ago I got fed up with my bank trying to sell me stuff over the counter whenever I had more than the usual amount into the account, asking me loads of financial questions in full hearing of everyone else. We live in a small town and there is always someone I know or recognise in there. They promised to make a note on my account that I didn't want them to ever try to sell me anything over the counter again.

I recently had a big project pay up and the money went into my current account to wait for April 6th when I can stick it in an ISA for next year. Every time I set foot in the bank the staff harrass me about it. "If you can pay in £1,000 a month you could have an account that pays a better rate of interest which is still crap." (Er, no, some months I don't have anything to pay in, and I can't cut a cheque for £3k into 3 parts and pay it in monthly.) "Have you invested in an ISA this year?" (Er, yes, but do I want everyone standing behind me to know that?) "Ooh, Mrs Waltons, do you know what your balance is? It's a lot of money to keep in a current account ..." (Hey, why not shout a little louder into the microphone? Someone at the back may not have heard you.)

Every time I say to them "I don't wish to discuss my financial affairs over the counter, and please could you note that on my account". In reply I just get more of it: "We can make an appointment with one of our financial advisors about investing lump sums if you wish." (Well now everyone knows that, at least this month, Mrs Waltons is filthy rich and catflap.)

It is absolutely driving me mad, and I've got to go in there again tomorrow. AIBU to feel that it is a huge invasion of my privacy? (Any bank staff out there who know how I can shut them up, please?)

Threaten to move your account (and any other family members accounts) elsewhere. I did this with my bank and they stopped bugging me about credit cards.

StealthPolarBear · 28/03/2011 21:28

oooh so you're rich are ya?? Fancy buying me dinner???
No yanbu,I would just continue to make your point, getting slightly more stroppy each time

darleneconnor · 28/03/2011 21:30

online banking...

OTTMummA · 28/03/2011 21:33

darlene beat me to it.
YADNBU.

It's not the counter staffs fault. They have targets to reach, certain questions they need to ask each customer and products to push. Talk to the branch manager about it and maybe they'll realise the staff are being too pushy.

DontGoCurly · 28/03/2011 21:34

Hmm emm..just keep saying 'no thanks' and then leave!

AuntiePickleBottom · 28/03/2011 21:34

if i got to pay in money i tend to use the cashpoint, no need to see the bank staff

belledechocchipcookie · 28/03/2011 21:38

You don't always get a reciept when you pay money in via the cashpoint, it's not worth it auntie. Use the counter, then you're protected incase they lose it (they have lost a cheque which I paid into my account once, lucky I kept the reciept)

It annoys me and I'm ex bank staff. There are targets for staff to meet and if staff don't ask it is noted on appraisals. You will get nowhere having it out with counter staff. Online banking, deposit point, post - avoid them! If you MUST use the branch ask to spaek to a manager EVERY time they do it.

Bringonthegoat · 28/03/2011 21:44

X post - as you were Smile

LoveMyGirls · 28/03/2011 21:44

I would ask when paying in the money, before they have chance to ask you anything if they have seen the note on your file? If they say no then you say I would like you to put a note on there stating I do not wish to be sold things over the counter, if I want something I am perfectly capable of asking. Thank you. Say it with a smile.

ecobatty · 28/03/2011 21:45

Do people still do things at bank counters? Why?

ecobatty · 28/03/2011 21:48

xpost. In that case I would open a separate account only for the teensy tiny cheques and the obscure bills - there will never be a large balance and you won't look like an attractive customer to the bank staff.

orienteerer · 28/03/2011 21:49

You can get a receipt from the in store cash point paying in machine. No need to go to counter (although I agree, I hate going to the Post Office these days as they try to sell me all sorts of things).

orienteerer · 28/03/2011 21:50

"Store' ......sorry, meant to say "bank" cash point....

serin · 28/03/2011 21:52

First Direct are wonderful.

Waltons · 28/03/2011 21:53

Yes, I feel I have to, because I've known some of the staff for years. Not personally, but most of them don't need to even look up my name on screen. It's bloody targets that do it - I'm sure they wouldn't bug me if they didn't have to.

Bank counters have to be used for stamping books, and my obscure transactions are an overseas transfer that has to be set up individually each time. That one is done by the "customer service lady", right in the middle of the queuing area. She tries to flog me stuff, and then to complete the transaction I have to go to the counter where the counter staff try to flog me stuff too. Aaaaaaargh!

on jan 1st the bank froze my account, i phoned them to ask why, after first tellin me i had one over the limit i was allowed to take out every month (of my own money) even thouh i take out the same every month, and it is likely over xmas people spend more, and i had to wait till the end of jan before i could take out any money, i arued with them and eventually they put me throuh to someone else who said becuase i tried to take out £200 the day i ot paid they froze it and would unfreeze it straiht away, (without askin ne security questions) i am totally baffled

laughalot · 28/03/2011 21:55

It is really annoying I agree but my dh works in a bank and if he dosent reach his targets or ask the questions he wont have a job Grin.

Hengameh · 28/03/2011 21:57

I love online banking for this reason.

I hate recpetionists anywhere who feel that discussing my personal health/wealth is fine in front of the queue behind me

belledechocchipcookie · 28/03/2011 21:57

Barclays are an absolute pain when you have to call them. Every sodding time they ask about my contents insurance. Every sodding time I tell them that I'm not interested yet they carry on and want to give me a quote. They owe me some M&S vouchers from the first time they did this and couldn't beat my current insurance company (twice as expensive!). I don't want this every time I have to call them up!

orienteerer · 28/03/2011 21:57

Another vote for FirstDirect, they are truely wonderful. You can pay in cheques by post as well.

Aimsmum · 28/03/2011 21:57

I hate bank staff trying to sell stuff!

My worst ever experience of it was one I found quite sneaky! I was in paying in money and she asked about a standing order i have to another account and asked if it was a child. I said yes, it was to my DD's savings account. Oh how lovely said the bank lady, how old is she...lots of nice questions followed and i thought we were just having a chat until she said "how you considered how your lovely daughter would cope in the event of your death?" and then tried to sell me insurance! Sneaky!!!

Waltons · 28/03/2011 21:58

Sophisticated stuff - wow! There isn't one here - just a secure post box! When the queue in the bank gets really long a lady appears from the back office with a plastic basket and offers people who are only paying in the chance to drop their cheques and paying in slips into it. (Beginning to wonder if I am living in the third world!)
