Just watching the start of the Scotland/Brazil match.

I'm not Scottish (DH is) but every time I hear Flower of Scotland I get a lump in my throat - it is the most fabulous stirring, National Anthem I've every heard. I'm very Envy

Sorry x post!

IntergalacticHussy · 27/03/2011 14:35

YANBU

ours is so crap. i don't give a fig about the queen personally, and i'm not so sure i believe in God these days either.

DH and i reckon by The Stone Roses should be England's national anthem, as it's a beautifully apt portrait of our country.

herecomesthsun · 27/03/2011 14:36

I'm half Welsh and very fond of the Welsh one. I do like the Marseillaise, and I think the English one would not have worked half so well in that scene of patriotic defiance in Casablanca. I like the SA one a lot too.

I think England would do well to adopt Jerusalem, but then I'm not all that keen on monarchy and find God save the Queen a bit unappealing. I can join in with it these days though (I would have found that hard as a teenager). I haven't got anything against the queen personally and wish her and her family well as people, I just think that what they stand for is a bit out of date.

herecomesthsun · 27/03/2011 14:37

Wales most deffo has a National Anthem!!!!

TidyDancer · 27/03/2011 14:37

Oh sorry, but I really can't stand the Scottish NA! That's not to say that I really love any of them tbh, but I have a particular illogical dislike for that one (nothing to do with it being Scotland btw!).

So I'm afraid I think YABVU! Grin

Although I too thought it wasn't the official one, I assumed it was part of the whole wanting to be seen as totally independant from England, but I could be wrong!

TheCrackFox · 27/03/2011 14:38

I'm scottish and I think the Flower of Scotland is a depressing dirge.

pink4ever · 27/03/2011 14:59

Flower of Scotland is ok but I think the German na is the best(think its called Deutschland uber alles?). Also agree that England should adopt Jerasulem-never fails to make me sob.

Well zukiecat, Highland Cathedral was written by a German for the bagpipes. I just think it's beautiful tune. Send shivers up my spine - but, each to their own Smile- Flower of Scotland doesn't send shivers up my spine - makes me cringe a bit to be honest.

MrsSchadenfreude · 27/03/2011 15:08

The Israeli national anthem is beautiful. Wins hands down for me. It is called "Ha Tikva" which means "Hope."

eatyourveg · 27/03/2011 15:15

Can't beat Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, Flower of Scotland is high on the list but outflanked by Wales and then Ireland's Call which I know isn't the real national anthem but its stirring stuff

I think they used Jerusalem at the Commonwealth games didn't they? At school we were always taught that Land of Hope and Glory was the nation's anthem and God save the Queen was for the UK as a whole

Ariesgirl · 27/03/2011 15:16

The Welsh one is the best of course When you've got 50,000 Welsh people singing their hearts out in the stadium, it sounds like a cathedral. Will never forget the Welsh grand slam of 2008, being surrounded by weeping Welshmen....

The Marseillaise isn't bad either. The South African one is very dignified. The Italian one in my opinion goes on a leetle bit, but is always amusing to watch.

God Save the Queen is the UK national anthem, not the Englisjh. It always annoys me that England can't decide on one of their own so they sing God Save the Queen as though the UK and England are one and the same. What's wrong with a bit of Land of Hope and Glory, a fine tune if there ever was one. I think Jerusalem proved it was a dud in the recent Commonwealth Games.

RatHammock, clearly you are on a wind up Grin. 5/10.

What about the Russian anthem? I LOVE it. Sung by the Red Army Choir it sounds pretty impressive.
The Russians changed it after the fall of Communism but their new one was so boring that they reverted back to the old one with different lyrics.

TwoIfBySea · 27/03/2011 16:06

Actual anthem is Scotland the Brave. Flower of Scotland was adopted as being a bit more...um...rousing?

We have an American working with us. He has been well versed in such things, including the traditional playing of Loch Lomond by Runrig at the end of parties :)

What would a good English anthem be? One that would have everyone singing themselves hoarse?

Flower of Scotland always needed a chorus imo. I don't like the tune at all.

Caledonia is a lovely song and Runrig's Loch Lomond rocks.

I still think The Proclaimer's 5,000 Miles should be Scotland's National Anthem.

Salmotrutta · 27/03/2011 16:38

Oooh yes - Caledonia is lovely. I'd completely forgotten about it!

JemimaMop · 27/03/2011 16:41

Hen Wlad fy Nhadau is of course the best National Anthem.
Although I might be a teensy bit biased... Grin

shmoz · 27/03/2011 16:48

Hen Wlad definitely the best by a mile. Twas also 1st anthem ever to be sung at the start of a rugby match - apart from NZ Haka (if you can call that an anthem as opposed to 'noise')

Grandhighpoohba · 27/03/2011 16:52

At the opening of the Scottish Parliament, they used "A man's a man for a' that" by Burns. If it weren't for my feminist principles Grin, I would want that as our anthem.

Caledonia is great, but it is about missing Scotland whilst you are away.

bemybebe · 27/03/2011 17:00

La Marseillaise for me all the way. I always liked it as a child but now remembering it in Casablanca it really lifts my spirits...

Russian Anthem is impressive, but it is so blood soaked, it makes my hairs all stand up in horror.

TiggyD · 27/03/2011 17:08

The Scottish one sounds nice and has lovely lyrics about sending the English home to think again, but remember who now owns Scotland, or Upper England as it should be called.

bemybebe · 27/03/2011 17:12

Ouuuuuuuh, tiggyD. Buckle up Wink

Salmotrutta · 27/03/2011 17:12

Ouch TiggyD!
