Godfather 1 and 2 well worth a look.
Godfather 3 utter shite made more utterly shitey by presence of Sofia Coppola in starring role due to being director's daughter wanting a hand up greasy pole.
I've seen better acting on Neighbours ffs.
(though now she's directing she's apparently veh good)

Never watched Sharpe, though would do Beany.

I don't like films and things without telephones in them. Too bonnety.

I think you're right about programmes.

Fresh2death · 27/03/2011 13:35

Sharpe is utter crap, lowest common denominator tripe television

Godfather on the other hand is cinematic genius

KurriKurri · 27/03/2011 13:37

I have not seen the Godfather or Sharpe either (not really sure what Sharpe is actually)- you are not alone Grin

Program is an american spelling, programme is Uk spelling I think - but I think with computers its always 'program'

Ragwort · 27/03/2011 13:40

I am totally un-clued up about films as well - I just have to nod and go 'mmm' when people talk about well known/classic films. I also really don't understand what it means to say a film is 'well directed' - either you enjoy it or you don't Grin - what does the 'direction' bit actually mean ?

I do understand the difference between program/programme though !

JaneS · 27/03/2011 14:06

YABU. Sharpe has every right-thinking lady wanting Sean Bean and a bucket of hot soapy water to wash him down in.

I'm not remotely clued up about the other stuff either, though ...

TrinityIsABunnyMunchingRhino · 27/03/2011 14:21

thanks bucharest

dp says the same as you re. godfather

I would so do beany and dh used to love sharpe but didn't know whether it was any good re. history

OP posts:
TrinityIsABunnyMunchingRhino · 27/03/2011 14:22

lol you lot are funny

dh thought godfather was amazing but also loved sharpe

Have only seen little bits of both so I think YANBU. The bit I saw of Sharpe seemed to involve young ladies having their clothing torn off by cads and Sharpe and his friends galloping in to the rescue. It looked like cobblers. DH likes it apparently Hmm

TrinityIsABunnyMunchingRhino · 27/03/2011 14:31

maybe that's why dh liked it Grin

OP posts:
SardineQueen · 27/03/2011 14:32

I suspect that was the appeal! A bit of old fashioned hero action and attractive damsels in distress...

MitchiestInge · 27/03/2011 14:35

I don't know what Sharpe is, but have had several goes at watching Godfather. It's just getting past that Really Bad Bit near the start.

Salmotrutta · 27/03/2011 14:39

Well, the Godfather(s) aren't for the faint-hearted but 1 and 2 are good. I did read the book years ago and it was OK.

I love Sharpe Blush - but then I love costume-drama stuff normally anyway.

SardineQueen · 27/03/2011 14:42

Sort of Bond with horses and bodices?

SardineQueen · 27/03/2011 14:43

Not Bond wearing the bodice, obv Confused

Boys-own adventure stuff, innit. Not that I am entirely sure what that means, but my mum always says it, and it seems apt Grin

Fresh2death · 27/03/2011 14:43

Sort of Bond with horses and bodices?

The biggest insult to Bond, ever!

Bucharest · 27/03/2011 15:34

Godfather book also very good. Covers fillum 1 and 2 IIRC, but never ever ever read anything else Puzo wrote. The rest of them are like Jackie Collins writes gangster-mafiosi bollix.

LDNmummy · 27/03/2011 15:38

Sharpe is probably one of the worst shows ever made in my opinion, the Godfather 1 and 2 are amazing, No1 being my fave film ever and really deserving of its status. No3 is rubbish.

redexpat · 27/03/2011 19:31

Sharpe is excellent 'ill' telly. You can snooze infront of it, and not really pay attention, and then open your eyes and see the wonderfully heroic sharpe save the day, save a lady's honour, whilst wearing uniform and knee high leather boots.

Never understood the attraction of Godfather.

Mandy2003 · 27/03/2011 20:12

Oh I see Redexpat! I always wondered why my Dad (aged 84) raves about Sharpe Grin

I think I may have read some of the Sharpe books years ago. I've never understood The Godfather - you can'd deny that Marlon Brando was class at Mumbling!

Sharpe is great, although only for Sean Bean's bum :o

I'd recommend the books though as they're far better than the series (although Sharpe the book character is nothing like Sean Bean...)
