to ask about your teeth?

suiledonne · 26/03/2011 11:06

Their general condition, number of fillings and extractions etc and your age?

I had a horrible experience at the dentist yesterday and am feeling very sorry for myself.

I am 36 and have always had issues going the the dentist.

Several years ago I found a lovely dentist and had lots of work done to great expense but she moved.

Following two pregnancies with hyperemesis my teeth have been weakened and I have a couple of bad cavities.

The dentist spoke to me like I was an idiot, did nothing to put me at ease and generally me feel like crap.

I am 45 and get personal xmas cards from my dentist. I think i paid for his last summer holiday to the maldives.

fatlazymummy · 26/03/2011 13:12

I have absolutely terrible teeth, I have just had some broken teeth removed and a partial denture fitted. I have had loads of fillings and extractions in the past and lots and lots of pain through the years. I am painfree at the moment and hope to remain that way.
My children all have perfect teeth, despite them not really taking fantastic care of them.

TheAllNewOoooh · 26/03/2011 13:25

I have awful teeth.

I can't remember the name of the condition, but when my adult teeth came through as a kid, they were already without enamel and yellowish. It is something to do with having fevers and antibiotics as a small child and that apparently damaged the development of my adult gnashers.

Because there's no enamel, they are too soft for braces and so are also rather crooked. They also get damaged easily so I'm am very precious with them but have had a lot of fillings in my time.

Despite this being a known condition, I've had a few dentists lecture me very patronisingly about dental hygiene. I tell them that they have been like this since I was six but once they are on their hobby horses it is difficult to get them off. It is bad enough having a crappy smile and having the average man on the street think that I have done this to myself, let alone professional who I am paying to provide a service. I feel your pain, OP.

Ugh, rant over. Sorry, sensitive topic!

mousymouse · 26/03/2011 13:39

agree with the others, find a new dentist he/she should never make you feel bad.
I was very bad at mouth hygiene as a teenager and have about 10 fillings, some of them quite deep in the molars.
with reasonable hygiene now I have only needed a few fillings replaced since I am 18 (now 34). goining to the hygienist regularly also helps (I think).

TheDetective · 27/03/2011 00:26

I'm 26, and thought I had pretty good teeth, they look nice, and didn't have any toothache... until last year. When I got toothache so severe, I had to have the tooth removed under GA because they couldn't rid the pain even though the tooth could have been saved.

Before it was taken out I was chewing on metal spoons, and living with alternate ice packs and hot water bottles on my face, vomiting in pain, unable to tolerate oral analgesia, thus ending up in A&E simply for pain relief. Was admitted to hospital for 2 days prior to my tooth extraction because it truly was unbearable.

Since then I have had another tooth crack, which needs filling. Went to a new dentist after my experience with having my tooth out, and he says I need 9 fillings and a root canal.

I can't quite believe it. You wouldn't think it to look at my teeth. Apparently I need 4 fillings on my top front teeth. This confuses and scares me.

They tried to do 3 of the fillings last week, but couldn't numb me. I don't think I will be able to tolerate it. I have an abnormally low pain threshold. Well, that is what I assume because of how others react to MY reaction of pain :|

I don't like teeth anymore.

TheLadyEvenstar · 27/03/2011 00:41

I had lovely teeth before I fell pregnant with DS2.
Then they started to crack.

I am atm looking for a decent dentist who I feel comfortable with to start work on them.

I don't smile and try to talk with my mouth closed.....but I am more confident than I was 8m ago about it. as I know understand it is more common than women realise.

AimingForSerenity · 27/03/2011 00:45

I'm older than most of you on here (now 51) and when I was a child the dentist filled all your back teeth as they came through so they wouldn't decay Shock. Most of my friends are the same. Obviously as years go by those fillings crumble and need refilling so my teeth are awful now.

I find it quite sad that many of my age group have suffered pain and had our teeth ruined by dentists.

spiderslegs · 27/03/2011 02:01

Theallnew - I have the same, yellow crooked gnashers for similar childhood reasons, horrors throughout childhood with poor dentistry but found salvation with a marvellous dentist at the age if 16 - he fixed them, replaced all my almalgam for composite & taught me to love them - I had the same lectures from hygenists.

I moved countries when I was 26 but used to come back to se him, after leaving exH I couldn't do that any more & when I was pregnant with DS1 was at the mercy of an NHS brutalist, I needed my wisdom teeth out & couldn't because of pregnancy, so caries spread to my adjacent teeth, I was in agony for months but he claimed he could do nothing - as soon as DS was born he leapt on me & extracted a tooth without anesthesia without so much as a warning.

Had the other five extraced under GA thankfully.

Took me two years to pluck up the courage to find a new dentist - happily found a humorous & gentle private practitioner who has restored my faith in the profession.

DelicateFluffyBunny · 27/03/2011 02:11

I have to have a root canal on Friday. Sad

I've had toothache for months but really hate going to the dentist - went yesterday as have huge swelling on my gum and an infection. Woe is me.

My dentist had to give up doing x-rays when I burst into tears! Blush

I don't wanna go back. I'm scared.

whatshouldicallmyself · 27/03/2011 02:14

I have a hideous dental history. From the age of 8 years old, my teeth were badly decayed, suffered terrible toothache and the dentist took out 8 teeth at once, as I was not good patient, to save me having to go back again. Continued poor dental hygiene led to crowns at the age of 16, top and bottom, followed by extractions and bridges. I feel like I am sitting on a time bomb, waiting for the inevitable when I have to have dentures. Grim when you are not in a position to pay for implants.

Tigerbomb · 27/03/2011 02:20

i am 45 - I have 2 fillings and three crowns. I still haven't seen sight nor sound of my wisdom teeth

My old dentist was wonderful but he retired and sold his practice to a a company that has quite a few practices and what seems like a different dentist every week.

I am now trying to find a new one

GotArt · 27/03/2011 02:23

Growing up, I was very lucky as my father worked at General Motors so the family had amazing dental coverage and I was covered till I was 25, then at 28 I started university and the student extended benefits plan included 90% coverage. No fillings due to cavities, one because my wisdom tooth has deep crevice and it would eventually develop one. I have all my wisdom teeth, one cap on a front tooth. I feel the same about the dentist and hygienist too; they speak to you like you are an idiot. I floss a couple times a week, brush at 3 times a day and still get flamed. Bloody hell, I pay them as I'm no longer covered under any dental benefits and get scolded. I was told that I needed to come in for a cleaning and check up every two months during my pregnancy too, and I said, I don't $200 for that. Then I get flamed for not being better financially prepared. Hmm

I am 31 and I have just had 3 teeth extracted under GA (so now 9 in total missing though 4 were wisdom teeth). I need a few more filled under sedation at the dental hospital but have a dental phobia after having a tooth cleaned/packed without anaesthetic. I ended up with a bit of a dental aversion (panic attacks!) when I was fine as a child - had loads of teeth out due to overcrowding and didn't mind it in the least. Now I get panicky at the thought of dentists rummaging in my mouth

So it's a really bad idea when you teeth grind to use the DCs children's toothpaste which meant I wasn't getting enough fluoride to stop my teeth crumbling.

Never mind at some point my dentist will deign to tell me what they will do when all the fillings have been completed to fill the gaps in my mouth - she won't even discuss the options yet Confused Just as well she's NHS as I would be really p'ed off to be having treatment with no end in sight if I was private.

Find a dentist you trust and hang on to them like grim death! If they are NHS thank your lucky stars!

Hulababy · 27/03/2011 09:06

I am 38y.

Have never had a filling.

I did have 6 or 7 teeth extracted as a young teen - they grew behind my other teeth so had them removed before having a brace for 18m.

However, my teeth are stained. I have perfectly straight teeth by they are in no way white sadly, which I hate tbh. And they bleed when I brush and floss, but no amlunt of dentist going has sorted that out.

I am overdue a dentist appointment actually. Must sort it out.

Crawling · 27/03/2011 09:21

I am 23 I have one filling that I am sure was uneccesary it was not painful until they filled it. But mine are genes to be honest, I didnt brush them as a child and was allowed far to many sweets and coke by rights I should not have any yet they are white, straight and in good condition.

nikki1978 · 27/03/2011 09:55

Aiming my parents had the same experience. They both have a mouthful of mercury fillings but they didn't need them. As I said earlier my brothers and I have very strong teeth so it is clearly genetic but theirs were ruined unnecessarily.

goodbyemrschips · 27/03/2011 10:01

3 fillings but nothing done since i was 13

I am now 42 go to the dentist every six months.

Highlander · 27/03/2011 10:08

I had 4 molar fillings as a teenager but nothing since. I only ever cleaned my teeth in the morning and never flossed.

I had a car crash and needed an implant for my front tooth and then DS2 headbutted my face so that a filling needed root canal but that's it.

I bough an electric toothbrush about 10 years ago and the difference when I see the hygenist is amazing. I'm not a flosser (and would have a ton of plaque every 6 months) but the hygenist says my teeth now look like a I floss every day.

TheAllNewOoooh · 27/03/2011 10:21

spiderlegs it is nice to hear from a fellow sufferer. I am completely Shock Shock Shock at the "natural" extraction! Poor you.

Skifit · 27/03/2011 10:34

52 and 4x fillings. 2 extractions and one Maryland bridge... cost £550
Dentist I have never hurts. I moved and i changed to a new one, (Mrs... cant remember her name) met her once and thought "No', and went back to my lovely old one 17 miles away. Its important to find one you trust and doesnt hurt.

ethelina · 27/03/2011 10:36

I'm 34, I have 2 fillings. I had a tooth removed because of an abscess when I was 12 and it was horrendous as despite 2 injections the anaesthetic didn't kick in til I was on my way out of the door. It put me off for at least 15 years, didn't go again til just before I got married. Luckily I had no real problems, just a good clean and lots of advice about cleaning correctly etc.

My teeth aren't straight though, looking back I should have had a brace but I never saw anyone to refer me as a teenager so it never happened.

JustaNickname · 27/03/2011 13:11

I have a HUGE fear of the dentist :( I shake and cry and generally freak out. I'm 21 and its been like that as far back as I can remember. I know that once the work is being done I'll be ok but the waiting and thinking about it is enough to put me off. I think if they could put me to sleep I'd be ok but tbh its to much of an ordeal for me. I'd love brilliant teeth but unless I get some sort of therapy I don't think it'll happen. So my teeth could be better although not yet black and falling out.

pawsnclaws · 27/03/2011 13:23

Aiming - I had all my molars filled as a child. My current dentist thinks I have really good teeth and can't understand why they were all filled.

Poor ds1 (8) has hypoplastic enamel - the dentist says probably due to the fact he had IUGR and was premature, plus pumped full of antibiotics until he was a year old. We have to be super super careful with his teeth because the enamel is so thin, and touch wood have avoided major problems, although one molar has caused particular concern as he recently had an abscess on the gum above. If he has anything at all sugary (even fruit) we have to rinse with water immediately (but wait an hour before brushing). Ds2 and ds3 seem not to be affected. We're hopeful it won't affect his adult teeth.

TruthSweet · 27/03/2011 14:33

Justanickname - You can have extractions down under GA and other dental treatment under sedation (they give you drugs like medazolam/diazapam) so you just need your dentist to refer you to the local maxilio-facial unit and/or dental hospital. It may take a while though to get treated depending on what you need done and the length of the waiting list.
