to think when you're a guest in someone's home it's a bit odd to

... appear downstairs wearing the dressing gown you've found hanging in the bathroom?

I've got an ancient fluffy dressing gown which is motheaten and threadbare and should really go in the bin if I wasn't so attached to it. Furthermore, I'm BFing so it's often a bit milky and yuck. Not ripe and festering or anything but still, not freshly laundered.

MIL is staying and yesterday morning she came down wearing it. I was a bit Hmm, although mostly embarrassed because it really is a rag. I apologised and got my (more presentable and clean!) spare one out of the wardrobe for her.

I'm just not sure whether now I should be providing dressing gowns for guests or whether it's odd that she helped herself? I'm more embarrassed than bothered but just Hmm - I wouldn't help myself to someone else's clothes, in particular not something as personal but maybe I'm the odd one!

Just because I haven't done it before now and if I start leaving one for her she might think I was miffed that she used mine. Which I am, but only cos it's awful and I obviously wasn't prepared!

I'm overthinking this now, aren't I?! :)

Don't over-think it to much, she'll be touched. Get it in her favourite colour and just say I was embarrassed when I saw you in that old rag of mine, I'd love you to have something nicer to wear.

ha! crossed posts.

I think it's odd that she borrowed an old one hanging on the bathroom door, but I think it's nice that you're going to buy one for her to use.

You are overthinking this now. Smile

i guess it all depends on how close you are to your MIL ... i still think its nice that she feels comfortable enough to do that however weird it may be. have a laugh with her about it.

washnomore · 26/03/2011 11:52

That's a nice way to put it zz, I think I'll do that.

I would say we are fairly close - she's fab, very kind and generous and tends to eclipse me spectacularly in the tact and diplomacy stakes! I still wouldn't ever inflict this hideous item on her by choice Grin

My in laws keep a box with spare dressing gowns slippers etc for if they stay over. It goes in spare room when they arrive, they wash stuff before they go and then it's reboxed and stored until next time. Maybe nice to put a little box together for her, then she will feel the lurve Grin

Yes it's odd. Buy one from Primark and leave it neatly folded on her bed with clean towels next time she comes. For bonus points, get her some slippers too!
