To insist the dishes be washed under running water?

I abhor greasy frothy dishwater, and 'floaters'. My DH thinks I'm wasting water.

YUBU I think it's a complete waste of water to wash like this, don't you rince dishes anyway I always do.

pjmama · 25/03/2011 16:36

I think if you're washing up, do it your way. If someone else is doing it, be thankful and let them get on with it! But then I hate washing up, ever thankful for my dishwasher. Grin

CalamityKate · 25/03/2011 16:37

That's hugely wasteful. If you're that bothered, take them into the shower with you.

NinkyNonker · 25/03/2011 16:37

You are wasting water.

Ormirian · 25/03/2011 16:37

Wash them in frothy water. Then put them in a new bowl of clean hot water. Don't wash them under running water! What a waste.

littleducks · 25/03/2011 16:38

I only wash up in running water, seems yucky otherwise. But i soap up all the plates first and scrub them then wash to try and conserve water.

tethersend · 25/03/2011 16:38

YANBU. At all.

DP is French and maintains that that is the 'French' way to wash up. I'm not too sure about that one. But it's definitely the right way.

winnybella · 25/03/2011 16:38

YANBU.

Dishwater

wonderstuff · 25/03/2011 16:38

DH does this, all the bubbles vanish - I rinse, wash in bubbly water, then rinse.

GrimmaTheNome · 25/03/2011 16:41

YANBU to wash up as you wish, but your DH is correct.
The solution is either to get a dishwasher, or for your DH to do the washing up his way.

HumanBehaviour · 25/03/2011 16:41

I thought British people never rinse their dishes at all?

YANBU, by the way.

anonacfr · 25/03/2011 16:42

My MIL fills the sink with soapy water. Then adds dirty dishes in there- sometimes for quite a while. She then washes them with a cleaning rag thing and puts them out to dry- no rinsing of either the dish or the cleaning wipe. The water ends up getting cold and she seems to re-use it all day.

Yuk.

I tend to use running water too. Or my dishwasher. Grin

anonacfr · 25/03/2011 16:42

Tethersend I'm French too! Your DP is right.

nickelbabyhatcher · 25/03/2011 16:45

no, you don't need to, because the fairy liquid will hold the grease away from the plates.

if you find your pots are still greasy, do them in two loads.
you can always rinse them afterwards if you need to.

BulletWithAName · 25/03/2011 16:46

YADNBU!

TheCoalitionNeedsYou · 25/03/2011 16:49

Dishwasher

TobyLerone · 25/03/2011 16:52

YANBU. This is how I wash up most of the time, because it's only ever a couple of bowls and a couple of glasses in the morning, and a couple of plates and a couple of wine glasses mugs and maybe a pot or two in the evening.

At weekends when we all eat together and I do a big, proper dinner, I'll wash what I can as I go along, under running water. Then when we've eaten, I'll rinse the dishes and wash them in a sinkful of water because there are at least 4 plates, serving dishes, glasses, bowls, cutlery etc.

The water doesn't get particularly dirty, because I rinse them and then wash them in the order I was taught to in home economics at school! Glasses, then crockery, then serving dishes, then cutlery, then pans.

NearlySpring · 25/03/2011 16:52

I can't work out how Id wash in running water unles I had mixer taps. I wouldn't want to wash in cold running water but couldn't washup under the hot tap as it'd be too hot to have hands under.

I always wash up in a bowl of hot soapy water and then rinse in hot water.

LadyThumb · 25/03/2011 16:54

We have the highest water bills in the country - and I can assure you, you wouldn't be doing it like that if you lived here. What a waste of water!

MissPenteuth · 25/03/2011 17:15

YANBU to hate the floaty water. I rinse all my dishes, or soak them if they've been sat out. My parents just wash them all in the same bowl, even when it's sludgy brown and full of floaty bits. I don't see how the dishes can possibly be coming out clean that way.
