To think there should be more cheap comics like we had in the olden days.

Ie without the plastic tat stuck to the front which inflates the prices.

Comics encourage reading especially in boys but I'm really struggling to find any affordable comics for the dc. Dtwin 2 likes The Beano at £1.30 which is just about affordable but struggling to find any more.Am I missing something, not looking hard enough??

I can remember my dsis and I having a comic (Twinkle etc)every week so they must have been cheap but at £2.80 with 3 kids there is no way I can shell out the best part of a tenner every week as that's £40 a month !!!!!!

We don't even want the tat, just a comic.

The dc are twin boys 7,7 and dd 6. Are there any more out there under £1.50 that we've missed???

If there aren't,there should be.

I despise the utter fucking shite that's attatched to every single child's magazine that exists. If it's not some horrible choking hazard or paints that probably contain lead it's sodding stickers which end up being stuck to everything and anything my children can get their hands on.

I don't believe many children bother reading the stories inside. I get myself my eldest son Doctor Who Adventures every week and he's straight to the back page to see what he's getting the next week. I should stop getting it really but I'm too much in love with Doctor Who I don't want to upset DS.

And as for Sparkle World. What the Hell is that about? It's HIDEOUS.

Bring back the proper comics! Pippin, Bunty and Horse And Pony were my favourites from toddler to teenager. Only once every few months (if that) did you ever get something free with it.

I soooo agree with you OP, I just to look forward to my Bunty/Just17/Smash hits arriving in the post it's a shame it has become so expensive - you may as well buy a book for the cost of comics these days Angry

Suggestions of finding old comics - definitely worth a try, but I think you're not very likely to find old girls comics. Old Beanos / Dandy should be doable, and old war comics (Victor). Other old comics are starting to be quite collectable now and are hard to get in longer runs so you can actually read a story in its complete form. The old annuals are quite easy to get & quite durable though so do look out for them in charity shops.

yanbu
It's cheaper to get a Mr Men book.

bees474 · 24/03/2011 22:14

Buster! Buster was a BRILLIANT comic.

southeastastra · 24/03/2011 22:15

my ds(9) would blardy love a horrible histories comic, educational too!

come on publishers!

Carrotsandcelery · 24/03/2011 22:19

We still have all my annuals (Twinkle etc) from when I was wee. The dcs love them (and laughing at my colouring in/puzzle failure etc.)

oggybags · 24/03/2011 22:24

you could buy books like comics fromt he works etc instead? think they do annuals etc cheaply?

TeamLemon · 24/03/2011 22:28

I really think publishers are missing a trick.
I used to get Twinkle every week on Comic day, and then the Beano when I got a little older. By my Mum taking me to the newsagents every week, it got me into the weekly buying habit. When I started my saturday job at 13, I used my own money to by Just 17. When I was a bit older I bought More. When I was a student, it was still a real treat to go and buy myself a magazine.

These new "comics" with all their plastic tat really put off parents from buying for their children. The children then don't fall in love with the joy of reading a comic and the collective experience that they provide.

Punkatheart · 24/03/2011 22:34

Go to charity shops. They sell comics and annuals. Sometimes as cheap as 20p for an annual.

berylmuspratt · 24/03/2011 22:42

I used to buy the Charlie and Lola comic for me DS when he was younger, lovely arty pack with every copy. Sadly he is now into Dr Who, and Dalek pencils just aren't as exciting as glitter, stickers and feathers :)
