He is 6 months and I have just booked a week abroad for the end of April... I figured it will be easier now than in 6 months or a year? Am I crazy??

It should be about 20 degrees there, so not stupidly hot... I have made sure to book it through a travel agent (which I wouldnt normally do) and to get lots and lots of reviews.

Please dont tell me IABU, its paid for now! Grin

it'll be lovely! Enjoy! take sun cream, lots of nappies, depending on where you are going they can be hellishly difficult to get, or expensive. mozzie repellant, plug ins.

small bottle of calpol, teething gel..

mrswarthog · 23/03/2011 22:01

Yanbu just be well prepared & have a lovely time. It's bloody awful between 1 & 2 then gets easier so enjoy it now.

redexpat · 23/03/2011 22:03

Sounds reasonable enough. He won't be able to toddle off anywhere. The lonely planet travel books have a section in each book about travelling in X country with children. Check it out before you go. Bon voyage!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/03/2011 22:03

Where are you going?

You may need to take loads with you, or you might need to just take enough for a day or two and then get the rest out there (and have a bit more luggage allowance for you!).

We took ds1 away at 12 weeks, it was by far the easiest holiday that we have done since having dc!!

Have a great time.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 23/03/2011 22:15

Me and DH always travel light, so there will be tonnes of luggage allowance to allow for nappies etc Grin

We're going to Rhodes, meant to go last year for cousins wedding but couldnt go as I was rather pregnant...

I'm taking DD at 18 weeks to Italy for ten days with DH and the PiLs, quite excited but totally unsure what to pack! I'm sure we'll be fine, it's the holiday to NYC that we've booked for Sept that has me more worried, real food will be involved!

I just found this website Kiwi , might help you too :)

yes we went to Zakinthos whit the year our daughter was born she was 12 weeks old, had no probs and loved attention of everyone.

squeakytoy · 24/03/2011 08:24

my stepson and his partner took their daughter to Barbados when she was about 4 months old, no problems at all.

Shakirasma · 24/03/2011 08:25

I took my son to Spain at 5 months, then gran canaria at 8 months. We have a lovely time.

Just make sure you have enough essentials to last for the journey and while you get settled in. Then go to the shops out there, there really is nothing you can't get . Don't be afraid to buy the foreign brands either, they are lots cheaper than the familiar brands and are perfectly adequate for a holiday.

lookingfoxy · 24/03/2011 08:34

I think it will be fine, I took ds when he had just started toddling and it was hard work, would have been much easier to take him when he was younger.

I think once their on their feet, its much harder, just remember loads of suncream and a parasol!

Couple of tips (we took DD to Greece when she was 8 months)

In Apr the pools will be too cold for your DS. We got round this by buying a blow up boat when we got there and every morning filled it a couple of inches (from the pool). We left it out in the sun for a few hours and it got lovely and warm for her - meant she could splash around happily.

We bought a couple of UV suits with the hats (as they were harder for her to pull off) and she pretty much lived in them. Babies really dont need that much in the way of clothing - UV suits for day, sleepsuits for night. Means you can pack more nappies (that were very exensive). We also took the opportunity for her to spend more time naked as well, great for nappy rash!

A lie flat buggy was a godsend for me and DH. Neither of us are party animals, but it was nice to have a sleeping DD and us still able to have a late meal and couple of drinks.

Will he be using a bottle? Some holiday companies provide a baby pack (for a cost) with sterilisers etc. Again saves on the packing.

HTH

allsquareknickersnofurcoat thanks that website looks great!

Bubbaluv · 25/03/2011 04:11

I can't understand why you might imagine YABU?
Except that 20 degrees is a bit chilly for a holiday IMHO. Wink

Stangirl · 25/03/2011 04:15

I took DD on a road trip across the US - flying from the UK at 5months last year. Easy. Had a N'cessity travel cot (like a small pop up tent), took pram with car seat attached, bf'd and bougt nappies there. Was no problem. Went out to dinner every night and DD slept in pram at table.

We plan to do the same this year with DD being 20mnths and a 3mth old. Should be interesting.....

LittleMissHissyFit · 25/03/2011 14:35

OOh, stangirl, I would LOVE to do that with DS(5).... just need to save up the £££££!
