TV at nursery

to expect them to have the TV on throughout the day at my 19 month old daughter's nursery? Some of the toddlers stand in front of it in a daze. I do let Flo watch TV sometimes but only for a limited time. The rest of the time she's outside running about in the fields or riding her pony/feeding the chickens etc. I think having the TV on at nursery is a bit of a cop out. Am i being unreasonable?

i should have pointed out that it being a rural nursery attached to a two acre secure paddock, surely the children should be out there in the fresh air rather tan gawping at peppa pig which is on ALL DAY.

yes all 19 month babies should be cantering about the fields

doesn't everyones child do this ?

CotswoldCountryMummy · 23/03/2011 22:30

it could quite possibly be that they turn it off sometimes. It's just that my friends little boy commented to her that it was on "lots" which rang alarm bells. Other than that, they do lots of activites like sensory/hearing/nature trails sometimes. It's just that it never used to be on at all, and now i have noticed it on every time i take her (all day fridays).

Would it be ok if they watched Black Beauty?

erm, finding it slightly odd that some of you seem more concerned by the fact my child has a pony, than the point of the topic, which is TV in Nursery? We live on a farm, both sides of our families have ridden for generations. Myself and my husband were plonked on a pony in a basket saddle before we could walk. Riding a miniature pony the size of a large dog (with assistance from parents) when you are 19 months isn't really that big a deal.

I think you are better off removing Flo from nursery and getting her to help out with mucking out Tilly's stable on a Friday-saves you £30 and gets the child ready for horsey life.

anyway, thanks those of you who offered constructive opinions and advice. It's a relief to know i'm not the only one who thinks TV in nursery isn't great. :-)

really great idea Thingumy, but Tilly lives out.

I've got a picture of my mum on a pony taken when she was 18 months. It's not the oddest thing in the world. Hmm

Ahhh! I've got one of my husband on his first pony Bonny. She was 13.2. ENORMOUS when compared to Tilly! :-)

Loving your photos!! I didn't realise you could put photos up here. I'll get some up of Tilly and Flo. Whose the black shetland? Gorgeous.

Mum didn't have her own pony as such, it was used to pull the trap, but from the pics we have it looks to be about 13.2hh. She was plonked on from an early age (hence the pic) but when she was a toddler she used to ride the ponies when they were driven (sat holding on to collar of harness). My Grandad was blind in one eye but could see her up in front, he was worried that if she fell out of the back of the trap he would be miles away before he noticed!

The shetland is a darling, I love her to bits and so does ds, which pleases me no end as he is severely autistic and rarely takes any notice of animals. We took her for a walk today and a lady actually parked her car and rushed over to give her a cuddle because she is so cute. Smile

she sounds lovely! when we're walking tilly and Florrie around the lanes here, people are always slowing down in their cars and smiling. Last sunday a couple stopped and took a photo!

I do think there is a place for telly in a nursery, just as there is a place for one in schools BUT not on all the time.
