Parking on zig zags outside school...

RockyAddict · 23/03/2011 17:37

At one of my DCs schools there is one parent that persistently parks on the yellow zig zags outside of the school. She doesn't live that far away but equally it's too far to walk plus she's usually motoring towards the school five minutes before school finishes. My thought is "why don't you get your knickers out of yer bum and get to school 5 mins earlier to get a 'decent' parking space'". But clearly she thinks the zig zags are there for her benefit.

I'm not quite brave enough to confront her face to face. WWYD?

Complain to the school/police. It is illegal to park on the zig zags, not to mention utterly selfish and unsafe.

ddubsgirl · 23/03/2011 17:39

yes it pisses me off too, after a few near misses at my boys old school the police & wardens started to turn up at start & end of school

Chil1234 · 23/03/2011 17:42

Traffic warden or community police? Most schools have traffic problems and, if prompted, will organise a swoop every so often to keep things in order.

nickelbabyhatcher · 23/03/2011 17:43

you can complain to the police - it's an offence.

TattyDevine · 23/03/2011 17:46

She might have a problem with tight turnaround re work etc - no excuse, but it might not be a case of pulling her finger out - however it is wrong. Generally if one person parks on zig zags, others follow and things get out of control.

I would keep out of it unless you are personally being significantly impacted by it. She'll get told eventually. It will make it seem like you have a bit too much time on your hands unless you are directly impacted by it.

Goblinchild · 23/03/2011 17:51

Complain to the school and ask them if you should contact the police about it, we had a similar problem despite patrols by various people from school. As soon as the patrolling stopped, the parking began.
Whilst the warnings were being given by school, various alpha types woud argue the toss.
It was only when the CP got involved that it stopped.
TD, interesting attitude. It's Someone Else's Problem, so ignore?

Dlamis · 23/03/2011 17:53

But hypothetically OP could be directly impacted, if this car caused an accident, porentially her dc's could be involved.

OP couldn't you approach it with a "Did you know it's an offence to park there I just wanted to warn you in case the police spotted you. Wouldn't want you to get caught"

Make it sound like you are trying to help her. If she's unreasonable about it, then report her anyway.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/03/2011 17:56

I wouldn't approach he person directly but go via the school/local police route. Better to keep these things impersonal.

DilysPrice · 23/03/2011 17:58

What really pisses me off is the people who park on zig zags in preference to the residents' parking bays. Surely if you're going to park illegally it would be better to park somewhere illegal but safe, rather than illegal and hazardous (and in this case, on a corner so preventing vans or lorries getting around the bend).

HooverTheHamaBeads · 23/03/2011 18:05

We have one at our tiny village school too. Drives her people carrier down tiny lane next to school, pickes up kids, then huffs and puffs trying to hurry us all along as she's driving through all the pedestrians.

Drives me flipping nuts why can't she wait the five mins until all the children and parents have dispersed? It is not safe and we have had letter after letter from the school asking parents to park at the green and walk the 100m to school.

RunAwayWife · 23/03/2011 18:06

I hate people who do this, at DS2s school we have people hwo do this, the head has spoken to then and was told to fuck off.
Its always the same ones who do it and its always the lardy ones who a bit of walking would do the world of good.

I got so fed up with it I got the local traffic warden to come don at home time and threaten to ticket everyone Grin

HooverTheHamaBeads · 23/03/2011 18:07

Run we must be at the same school then. This lady's arse is the size of Australia.

grumpypants · 23/03/2011 18:09

our local PCSO said they wouldn't do tickets as it would alienate the parents! Local residents apparently complain a lot to the school, whoo just put polite notices in the newsletter. i think a ticket/ good teeling off would be far more efficient - unless there's a direct impact on them or their pocket, some people will carry on regardless (same with mobile phones and cars etc)

Our school has a very good relationship with the PCSO who comes at the drop of a phone call. They all send out regular letters telling all parents that it's illegal and dangerous to park on the zigzags and the police will issue fines/points on your licence.

It makes me mad that some people see it as their right to park there because they're wearing high heels or have a small child. They're not the only ones in that position and if everyone else can manage a 100 yard walk, why can't they?

MerylStrop · 23/03/2011 18:14

Get the Head to talk about her in assembly and write a pointed note in the newsletter.

Or put an anonymous note on her car everyday

thisisyesterday · 23/03/2011 18:16

I would inform the school.
or, inform your local PCSO if you have one. we can e-mail ours. we have a major parking problem outside school and she is often there hanging about!

MillsAndDoom · 23/03/2011 18:16

Our school is on a narrow one way street - literally nowhere to pass - there is a hard core of about 15 parents who drive down the road, stop at the bottom of the school drive on yellow zig-zags blocking road, get out, get their children out and on to the pavement, then get back in and drive off, completely ignoring all the people beeping behind them. They do the same in reverse at the end of the day.

Fucking selfish bastards.

Can you tell it pisses me off no end? Grin

AgentZigzag · 23/03/2011 18:23

I'm getting mightily pissed off with drivers parking on more than half the pavement at school.

There was an open top (completely irrelevant Grin) car parked opposite DD1s school on the pavement today, the driver only left just enough room to walk past single file (there was a wall the other side of the pavement) with me pushing a pushchair and DD pushing her bike.

The woman was just getting out of the car so I shouted (a bit too loudly) 'Don't scratch the car with your bike DD', secretly hoping the sometimes clumsy DD did get into a bit of a fix through lack of space.

I could have said something, but I didn't fancy the risk kicking off when I told her what I thought of her thinking she had more right to park on the pavement than us walk on it.

AgentZigzag · 23/03/2011 18:24

It's a bit weird seeing 'zigzag' everywhere - don't park on me Grin

RockyAddict · 23/03/2011 18:35

Zig Zag I would never park on you!

Right, thanks guys. I realise that I am pretty 'normal' in being so peed off about this. I shall speak to the head tomorrow and if nothing happens I'll contact the community police.

agent zigzag... are you a pco in disguise?

AgentZigzag · 23/03/2011 18:43

Important covert ops blackeye

Much more important than a pco Grin

CocktailQueen · 23/03/2011 18:46

I'd prob have a word with the school sec and ask her to add a bit in the school newsletter reminding parents not to park on the zig zags..... if she's ignorant enough to park there she won't welcome you telling her off about it!!
