We had naming ceremonies and appointed people in a "god"parenting roll but I just don't know what to call them. What do you say?

I still called her a "god"mother but we all know there'll be no religion involved whatsoever.

I'm interested to see if somebody else has come up with a good alternative though.

mnistooaddictive · 23/03/2011 07:28

Guardian, sponsor, mentor,

moomiemoo · 23/03/2011 07:53

We haven't come up with anything other than "god"parent either.

It does help to have a term that they (and you) don't have to explain when talking about their godparents to other people.

LizaTarbucksAuntie · 23/03/2011 07:55

Are they potential guardians?

I had two 'special' people who weren't godparents and it always felt really secure to think I had 'guardians'

bigbutton · 23/03/2011 07:57

My friend is a "fairy godmother" to a couple of children, which I always thought was a nice way of putting it

NeedToSleepZZZ · 23/03/2011 07:57

I'm 'godless' mother to my friend's son if that helps Grin

SchrodingersCatFliesToOz · 23/03/2011 08:00

we use the french words here (it helps that I am french Grin) because there is no real translation in english so we have marraine for the women and parrain for the men.
it can translate in godmother/father but no god involved you can be parrain of a piece of art (which my dds are Wink)

cheekyprincess · 23/03/2011 08:05

I had my ds christened. The priest told me that as one of the "god fathers" was not himself he would be a sponsor. He has really taken to it. Sorry if thus doesn't help!

susssiq · 23/03/2011 08:56

yeah i live in sweden and we say Fadder which translates to sponsor but that just doesn't sound right. I like Fairy Godmother just not the god bit :-)

I think we should invent a word!

Makingaminime · 23/03/2011 09:15

I think sponsor or mentor are both nice. Don't think I would use Godmother/father if it wasn't a baptism/christening.

valiumredhead · 23/03/2011 10:00

We call ds's Godmother 'Oddmother' Grin

Ds was never christened and didn't have a naming ceremony but ds refers to my friend as 'Aunty' as she is so special :)

atmywitssend · 23/03/2011 10:09

My nephew and niece have "Mentors" but they refer to them as "Auntie" and "Uncle"

DrSeuss · 23/03/2011 10:15

DS has two OhmyGod Mothers whom he addresses as Auntie. He wasn't christened but they were chosen as they were my two closest friends and I wanted him to have aa significant someone other than his parents.

ocdgirl · 23/03/2011 11:04

guide parents ?

Blu · 23/03/2011 11:08

DP's is variously known as god-free mother, odd mother, bad influence or the back-up system!

SchrodingersCatFliesToOz · 23/03/2011 12:35

I like the odd mother! Grin

susssiq · 23/03/2011 16:28

guidemother hmm that sounds okish

Not often i need to put in english but 1yr anniversary of My daughters naming day is coming up and her guidemother (testing :-) asked if she can have her for the day just them was so sweet i wanted to put it on facebook but got stuck :-)

OP posts:
funtimewincies · 23/03/2011 16:39

The 2 ds have a 'godless mother' but that might not be quite what you're after Grin.

notso · 23/03/2011 16:40

Mine were Christened but we call them Goodmothers not Godmothers
