to expect the nursery to be able to accommodate my need for an extra day?

In December I asked to increase DS's nursery days from three to four.
I was told that they don't expect to be able to accommodate my request until August or Septmber when the pre-schoolers go to school.

I know it won't change anything if I'm NBU but I'm just curious to know what other peoples experiences are.

They have ratios to maintain. I have similar issue at the moment and they can't accommodate my extra day until July, I understand, if they had the space they would help me out but they don't so they can't.

YABU.

If they are full then they are full.

TabithaTwitchet · 22/03/2011 21:46

Yabu. They must be full on the other days, what are they supposed to do, tell another child they have to reduce their days? They can't tak more children than they have the capacity for.

We had to wait six months for a place on Mondays and a year for a place on Fridays.

Full is full, few decent nurseries cna offer additional days at the drop of a hat.

If they don't have space that don't have space. It's quite simple really. What are you expecting them to do?

BetamaxBandit · 22/03/2011 21:49

Sounds similar to my DD's nursery. Very popular and I've always had to give plenty of notice for extra days.

RitaMorgan · 22/03/2011 21:50

Not sure what you're expecting them to do either Confused

Meglet · 22/03/2011 21:51

um, yabu. If they don't have the space they can't magic it out of thin air. They can't chuck another child out to make space Confused.

My dd had to wait almost 7 months to get the full quota that I needed.

hormonalmum · 22/03/2011 21:52

My childminder cannot accommodate one of my children due to a change in MY circumstances.

I just have to sort something else out and so should you.

yabu. if they can't accommodate your DS, they can't - i assume something to do with legal requirements/etc.

stealthcat · 22/03/2011 21:53

This is pretty typical. The pre-schoolers moving up to school will create a bit of space, but until then you are dependent on someone else deciding to leave.

They are full. They can't just find another place. Surely you appreciate that the safety of children has to come first, and that means adhering to the child staff ratios.

madwomanintheattic · 22/03/2011 21:54

if they are full, they are full. very common. it would be unusual if they had spaces tbh - not much flex in ratios on a nursery nurses wages.

the one exception i had was when they insisted dd2 went 5 sessions from the get-go as she required 1-1 help. so they had to employ an additional member of staff for her, but couldn't afford to do so if we were only using 2 or 3 sessions a week.

it is what it is.

maybe consider a cm or nannyshare if you need an extra day or two?

bonkers20 · 22/03/2011 21:57

Hmmm, maybe I shouldn't have put this in AIBU...I knew it would get your attention though ;-)

Don't get me wrong, I understand the ratios, that they are a business and that they can't chuck another child out, but I just wondered how common this problem was.

They are being very good about letting me know if another child is on holiday or off sick.

It's a lovely nursery and I was lucky to get a place in the first place (it's on site where I work), it's just frustrating that's all.

The fact tht it is lovely is probably part of the problem!

You might get lucky. At my DDs nursery a few chidren leave at the start of the school summer holiday rather than at the end of it, so if that happens at your nursery it could create some space.
