I mean seriously, it's not that hard. The instructions on the side of the tub tell you how to do!!!

It even says "Because powdered milks are not sterile, failure to follow instructions may make your baby ILL"!!!

Rancerdoo, I've asked scientist friends about this and they seem to agree that boiling water can denature the proteins. I let the water cool in ice water first or mix boiling water with cool boiled.

LadyDisdain · 23/03/2011 20:17

And yabu, OP

NorthernGobshite · 23/03/2011 20:17

YABU. Its a prenting forum and people ask all kinds of random things. thats the whole point!

WoTmania · 23/03/2011 20:19

YABU - Do you also want mother's with sore nipples etc to stop posteing? Surely 'If people are able to navigate their way to a parenting forum and post a thread then surely they are able to search kellymom and get to a local drop in' Hmm. Far better that they post on here and ask than do it wrongly,

RancerDoo · 23/03/2011 20:23

Ah yes, denaturing proteins. The things I have been told might do that...

  • shaking formula
  • shaking breastmilk
  • microwaving breastmilk
  • overheating breastmilk
  • overheating formula.

Never seen any of it from an "official" source though, or any studies. Think if I were bottlefeeding I'd probably risk a small drop in nutrition vs an increased risk of serious illness/me never actually managing to feed my child without hysterics (had by me or them as we desperately waited for the bottle to cool). Seems like we're damned if we do and damned if we don't.

Or maybe it's all a drive to get parents to shell out on cartons... [dons conspiracy theory hat]

Cambington · 23/03/2011 20:39

Dual feeding with both bottle and breast after going back to work (in the days when you only got 4 weeks at 90% then 12 weeks at £56 then nothing) I used to be too tired to count properly how many scoops I was putting in - numerous half made bottles down the sink cos I lost count! Ended up breast only at night cos I really was non compos mentis... still am...

Cambington · 23/03/2011 20:43

Couldn't read, couldn't count... she's still alive and thriving!

annabelflowers · 23/03/2011 21:08

Yes, I have also sent several half made bottles down the sink thanks to losing count!

upyourdiva · 23/03/2011 21:36

YABU. The guidelines change all the time, so a search could throw up some old rules which could lead to the parent making a mistake or would you prefer that?

When I had my DS in 2006 I asked my HV and MW many, many times if I could make up formula with bottles of room temperature boiled water so that I could make them up once a day. I was never given a straight answer so I did it the way my mum did it. Which incidentally was wrong Blush

The tub was useless all it said was add 1 scoop to one ounce of COOLED boiled water, if I had of found MN at the time I would have panicked and wanted to know more about why the method I was using was wrong.

New parents have a right to ask, if you don't want to read it then hide or avoid the thread.

whoamamma · 25/03/2011 17:05

piccalily If people are able to navigate their way to a parenting forum and post a thread then surely they are able to search for threads that interest them, and hide those that don't.

Otherwise, what deathstare said.

ledkr · 25/03/2011 17:58

yabu and petty. This is a parenting forum and we are all at various stages of parenting, obviously if you have a 5yr old you dont need to be learning about making up bottles but if you are pg or switching from bf to ff you will need this advice therefor the threads on this subject will be constant as they are constantly needed. Just dont click into them and they wont annoy you at all.
