AIBU in thinking I am a mug

We are on strike on thursday. Well, I am. many of our staff dont seem to be joining the strike .I only joined the union recently and have a temporary contract anyway, so the reason for the strike wont directly be of any impact to me. I will lose a day's pay and Im only part time so its a good chunk of my weekly pay. Im wondering if Im being a mug given so many full time, permanent staff arent bothering.

If it was me I would not bother.

If she's a member of the union then she ought to follow the unions recommendations regarding striking. A strike isn't about one day's pay for one person, it's about pay and conditions for a lot of people over a length of time.

onlion · 22/03/2011 17:45

Potentially, my contract could be extended i guess.

Presumably you joined the Union in order to have support with regards to your working conditions should you need it. In my opinion, if you expect this support for yourself, you should be willing to support those that would potentially be supporting you should the situatuion arise.

mmsmum · 22/03/2011 18:36

If you are temporary I don't think striking when others aren't will do you any favours if you want to be made permanent. I wouldn't have joined a union anyway if I was a temp

turdass · 22/03/2011 18:38

If you are in the union, you need to strike. Striking is about people power, not about whether or not something benefits you personally.

onlion · 22/03/2011 18:44

mmsmum my temporary contract was 5 years

vj32 · 22/03/2011 18:55

How can you be on a temp contract for 5 years? Is it fixed funding? Usually after 3 years (I think it is) you become permanent whatever your contract says.

mmsmum · 22/03/2011 18:56

a 5 year temp? That's a new one

onlion · 22/03/2011 18:57

Not here, I have a contractual requirement to complete a phd before they make me permanent so 5 years and Im off

OP posts:
onlion · 22/03/2011 18:58

I only have 2 years left btw

Agree with turdass. Striking is for mutual benefit to the profession.

lenak · 22/03/2011 19:09

I'd never strike - but that is why I'd also never join a union.

I agree with those who are saying if you are a member of the union and they have voted to strike, then you should strike, even if you don't agree with it.

If you don't want to strike, cancel your union membership.

WillbeanChariot · 22/03/2011 19:19

One out all out.

That's the point of unions is it not? Strength in numbers and collective bargaining. My sister's union went on strike recently. She didn't agree with the reason and voted against it. She still joined the strike.

OldMumsy · 22/03/2011 19:34

You are being a mug.
