to not know what to do about a speeding ticket?

DitzyLiz · 22/03/2011 15:55

Sorry not really and AIBU but I'm just looking for a bit of advice as I'm a little worried.

A few weeks ago I possibly set off a speed camera. I say possibly as the camera flashed me but I was going about 35 in a 30 zone, possibly even less, and a car on the opposite side of the road was also passing so it could have been that car that set the camera off.

The problem lies in the fact that I have changed address in the last few months so if I did get a ticket it would have been sent to my old address because I forgot to change with the DVLA. I'm going to change the address tomorrow when I renew my tax, but am worried that if I did get a speeding ticket I will accumulate lots of charges as it may take them a few months to locate where I am. Is this the case? Or will the original amount still apply when they track me to the new address? That is even if it was my speeding ticket, I could be worrying about nothing but Im a worrier by nature!

Thanks for reading

I don't even drive so I'm only guessing Grin but even if you have accumulated extra fines I'm sure you'd be able to appeal against them.

It would mean a bit more stress doing it, but you're worrying about it anyway and you've got to contact the dvla at some point in your life.

So just get it over and done with.

You'll know what problem you're up against, and there's always the chance that you didn't get done over.

You have two identical threads BTW

DitzyLiz · 22/03/2011 16:06

Hmm not sure how I managed to start two threads. Im answer to what you replied on the other thread chippminton, no I didnt get my mail redirected. I changed address for everything else before I moved, the DVLa just slipped my mind. But even though I'm going to change address with the DVLA, aren't speeding tickets controlled by the local police? Not sure how they will know that I have now changed address after the ticket?

Cameras only take pictures on one side of the road. WHat type of camera was it?

AdamJSusan · 22/03/2011 16:10

If they have not notified you with 2 weeks it is gone, unless you have a hire car or something as they only are obliged to tell the keeper of the car within 2 weeks.

So if it is your car and you have heard nothing for more than two weeks, relax.

manfromCUK · 22/03/2011 16:11

The Police will find it pretty easy to track you down - especially if you update DVLA tomorrow.

It's an offence it itself not to notify DVLA, but no-one ever seems to get done for it.

I wouldn't worry too much - even when they flash, the cameras often don't have film in - I've triggered 2 over the years and never heard another thing.

As the magig dragon says - cameras aren't triggered by cars going the other way

AdamJSusan · 22/03/2011 16:11

Ah misread the Op. Was it a forward or rear facing camera? A double-flash Gatso type is for behind you, a single flash in your face is for in front of you.

DitzyLiz · 22/03/2011 16:14

Thank you for your responses.

Not sure what type of camera it was, but I think it flashed twice.

It is an offence not to change the address on your driving licence or any of your vehicle documents, and the penalty is fine and points.

ENormaSnob · 22/03/2011 16:15

It's an offence to not notify the dvla so you need to do that asap.

AdamJSusan · 22/03/2011 16:19

After you change your details on DVLA, if a notice arrives dont just pay it anyway.

If there is only one pic off a double flash (or no pic) enclosed with the fine, write back straight away asking to see the photographic proof of your guilt.

If they send you pics, write to them asking to see the certificate of callibration for that camera, especially the date is was signed.

If they do that - er pay up pronto!

AdamJSusan · 22/03/2011 16:22

Depending on who issues the ticket they often cannot be bothered chasing an awkward victim, why bother when hundreds an hour already pay automatically at no cost to them. Make it so that its not worth their while collecting the poxy 60 quid. Unless you are in Warwicksire (they get their pound of flesh).

You should be able to work out, from that, whether it was taking a picture of you or not. IE: if it was a truvelo, but you had your back to it, then it was taking a picture of the car on the other side of the road. Generally, the cameras are on the same side as you - if the camera is on the other side, it will not be flashing you.

scurryfunge · 22/03/2011 21:05

If you changed your address for your car insurance then you are traceable.

You need to be notified within 2 weeks.

Have you checked with the occupant of your old address?

penguin73 · 22/03/2011 21:06

Notify DVLA ASAP and also contact your old address if you can and check if there is any mail - failing to notify DVLA of a change of address is an offence in itself and, whilst they are unlikely to do anything about it they certainly wont accept it as an excuse for not paying! And35 in a 30 will definitely trigger a camera, it is just pot luck if there was film in it.

SandStorm · 22/03/2011 21:08

Did you leave a forwarding address for the new owners? If you did, they probably would have sent any speeding fine on to you by now if you got one.
