To be fed up with people asking for their threads to be deleted?

There seems to be a spate of requests to delete threads when the OP hears something they don't like or people disagree with them.

Iabu to think this is quite rude? I understand there are extreme cases where thread deletion is appropriate but I'm talking about the threads (usually AIBU) where the OP gets in a huff. Why not just click "hide thread" if it all gets too much?

YANBU

I feel that OP's shouldn't have such "privileges" without good reason.
Just delete all their posts including the OP if they so wish.
People might think twice.

There was a situation a couple of weeks ago where

  1. an OP somewhat inadvertently, in a follow-up post virtually identified someone, clearly putting that individual in considerable potential danger. I reported the post twice in 3 days. Nada.
  1. Meanwhile, an entirely "normal" thread with no nastiness whatever and 400+ coherent, balanced comments, simply got zapped within 30 minutes of the OP stropping onto the thread and announcing "Yawn. Anyhow, I'm off to have this deleted".

Consistency would be appreciated.

thekidsrule · 22/03/2011 11:53

have to admit find some of the threads gtting a bit tedious on AIBU of late

and yes unless the thread could cause REAL problems, then it should stay

KatieMiddleton · 22/03/2011 12:44

So consensus is IANBU.

That's good. Otherwise I'd have to have a bit of a strop, run to tell the big girls at MNHQ how mean you all were and got the thread pulled Wink

YABU. Most message boards offer the facility to edit or delete your own posts. I find it a bit strange and high-handed that MN doesn't.

KatieMiddleton · 22/03/2011 12:50

Pepsi this is Mumsnet. We have standards to keep. Most message boards indeed!

I prefer this site to others because you can't edit and delete posts.

Op. YANBU

scurryfunge · 22/03/2011 12:58

I think the rules for deletions seem inconsistent because we never really know what has been said to MNHQ. All someone needs to say is "I think I have been identified in RL" and off it goes.

Don't you ever make an embarrassing mistake or post something in haste or when you're tired, and wish you hadn't?

scurryfunge · 22/03/2011 13:07

People may regret an individual post but a whole thread, Pepsi? Grin

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 22/03/2011 13:14

actually I would like an editing facility that allows you to add to a post, or yes be able to reword an OP.

The number of times people have "missed" a key update about an OP and posted something entirely crap, or because of the situation the OP found themselves in at the time of posting the OP their first post isn't very clear/co-herent they've then had to spend the next 4hrs explaing themselves (often x100 as new people come on and don't read all 372 posts on the thread before posting).

KatieMiddleton · 22/03/2011 13:22

Baroque if you reword an OP won't the rest of the thread make no sense?

Would it not be better to say "sorry i've not been clear. I'm going to start a new thread. You folks carry on the discussion if you want but I'm off". Then click hide thread and have another go?

Pepsi - yes I have occasionally said things I regret. And I've apologized and moved on. I do try to think before I post though.

AngryBeaver · 22/03/2011 13:33

God,I was recognised by someone in rl and had to go about finding threads that divulged personal and emmbarrasing info that I would rather rl people did not know, and asking MN to delete them post haste...they were most obliging and said threads were gone within 10 mins.
It has made me very wary about posting though.I liked being anonymous and never imagined anyone would recognize me Sad

AngryBeaver · 22/03/2011 13:34

argh, sorry for spelling..am feeding baby and dealing with tot at same time!

cumfy · 22/03/2011 21:11

Pepsi
The problem is entire threads being deleted without any real reason by dictat of the OP.
So 98+% of the stuff deleted is not the OP's.
