Sleeping child in car...WWYD?

On my way home from a meeting today I saw a child of about three asleep in a parked car, alone.

It was a quiet residential street, although there was a garden centre about 100 yds away.

Just wondered what others would have done in this situation and whether I was right?

I never wake the kids if their asleep in the car. They're all well used to waking up in the car and know i'm checking every few minutes.

That being said I live in the arse end of nowhere and have no neighbours, much less a street outside my front door and if anyone had been hovering around the car i would have been out like a flash.

So based on what you've said about the area and the fact that no-one seemed to be watching the child I thinnk you were probably right to do what you did.

I would have done the same Tethersend, better to do something, than to do nothing and something happened to the child. The op knocked on the doors near to the car, the child was not theirs, nobody came after 5 mins, sorry that is cause for concern its a child. Even if you pay for petrol or go to the corner shop, you are in sight of the car, the parents were not or they would have seen you and come out. You did not overreact, you did the right thing.

I'd have done what you did too OP! I was in a car that went on fire when I was about 6 and yes I know cars have improved massively in the last X years but even so! When my DC fall asleep on route home (which rarely happens) I get a book and sit in the car with them until they wake - great excuse for 15 minutes peace! :)

The fact that nobody laid claim to the child, and that the op was waiting by the car, and nobody came out was worrying. What if he overheated, car was carjacked, caught fire. No op you behaved like a responsible adult, to do nothing would have been neglect even though it might not have been anything to worry about.
