To think it's normal for a 4.5year old to fall over sometimes

Dh insists there's something wrong with dd2. Says she walks weirdly, and still falls over (maybe once a fortnight) which in his opinion isn't normal.
I say she looks fine to me, but if he's concerned then he can take her for a checkup. He's annoyed that I won't take her, presumably because I usually do appointments etc, but what would I say? My daughter seems fine, would you look at her.
I have 2 older children, he has none.
I've tried to get dd2 to walk about so I could have a look, but once she knew we were looking she just started doing comedy walks quite deliberately. I found this quite funny, dh took it as evidence that she can't walk properly. He keeps doing impressions of what he says she walks like on the school run, which I can only liken to my friend with cerebral palsy when inebriated. I've certainly never seen her walk like that.
Obviously, you can't judge her walk over the net, but isn't it normal to still fall over and have scabby knees at 4.5?

I would say she sounds fairly normal , i can remeber a period of my life ,at about her age ,when i had a plaster on one or both knees all the time .

I've taken ds2 to the docs because he keeps falling over - he's only 2 but I wanted to make sure there was nothing wrong (figured it was worth getting eyesight, ears (for balance) and legs checked out plus whatever the docs thought of)

they reckoned he has flat feet - might be something to look at and see as apparently that can cause some problems...

My DH sometimes asks me to take the DC to the doctor over things I think are totally unnecessary - I just tell him to take an hour off work and do it himself. I don't want to be cast as the ridiculous mother at my GP. I want to know that when I go in they will know it's because something really is wrong.
If DH had his way I'd be in there every time they got a cold!

Exactly how I feel bubbaluv. I just can't see anything is wrong, but if he does, then that's fine he can take her himself. Doesn't mean he's ridiculous, but I would certainly feel ridiculous asking someone to check out a problem I don't think exists. Certainly I think his impressions are insane, I've never seen anyone without a major disability walking like that.

We had this situation the other way round a few months ago. I thought her eyes didn't look straight, he said I was being daft, but was quite fine for me to get it checked. Turns out she's severely long sighted and has just got very strong glasses. Probably why she's falling over a bit at the mo, although pretty much the same as before I think.

Just wish he'd take her if he's worried and stop mithering me to.

I'm pretty accident prone so both of my DC fall down regularly.

Doesn't hurt to have her checked out, but shouldn't matter which parent takes her.

My ds2 had a foot that turned in since he was a baby. At 5 months I got him looked at, and the dr said he would outgrow it. Fast forward to age 6, foot still the same, plus clumsy walking and a bit of a limp when tired. Doctor suggested skiing and skating. We enrolled him in skating, it didn't help any, ds began complaining of leg pain when tired and waking up at night with it. Doctor said, growing pains. However, she did send him to an orthopedic surgeon.

He x-rayed ds and said it was a muscle thing and not correctable. We asked for a prescription for orthopedic insoles. He gave us one, but said he didn't feel they would help.

Took ds to get fitted and the guy there said if ds had been fitted with them years ago, he would be cured. Guess what? The insoles did straighten his leg and subdued his leg pain for over 10 years. He did sometimes wake up at night when about 12-13 and growing taller, but that passed. He wore insoles for 4 years, and his leg isn't clumsy now, but he is having leg pain again, just the past few months, and having an ultrasound done later this month.

DD is 4 and her teacher told me that she fell over while sitting on the floor the other day Hmm - so scabby knees completely and absolutely normal.

Absolutely agree that DH should get her checked out. If only he sees it, only he can explain the issue. End of.

Iscream, that's so annoying isn't it. Ds had weird curled toes, and foot pain for years. Went round in circles trying to get a referral for years. Eventually referred to podiatry clinic, which turned out to be for elderly diabetics, and they didn't know what we were doing there.
I asked if she could help, she said yes, I know the problem, you son has 'curly toe syndrome' just tape them straight. Cue years of taping. Pain eased initially, then got much worse. Eventually got to see a physio, who said the taping was the worse thing we could have done. He had to have a whole year of physio, and no sport at all to sort it out (he's sport-mad). It's still not great and he still pulls tendons in his feet a lot.

Has she got flat feet? Do her shoes wear down unevenly? My dd walked weirdly and fell over a lot at that age, by age 7 she was developing severe ankle pains and finding it difficult to weight bear. I would get it checked out tbh; dd is having all sorts of problems due to not getting support in time.

iscream · 22/03/2011 08:28

Yes, it is frustrating! I hope your daughter has nothing wrong, or something easily corrected. It could be something as simple as needing a different style footwear. Your sons curled toes sounds painful.

Bonsoir · 22/03/2011 08:29

Have you had her sight checked? Long sight (or other sight problems) often cause children to fall over.
