I have the implant currently,

its played up since day one, constant bleeding I was put on the pill for 3 month course to help regulate. It hasnt worked :(

I had a period for a week off for 2 days now I've been back on for 4 days :(

Do you think If I asked my doctor to have the pill aswell to control the bleeding they would let me?

other than the bleeding I like having it ,really don't wanna get rid and most other options I have cause alot of weight gain I'm told and I can't afford to put on weight, and when I was using condoms I had to go for the morning after pill like 5 times.

I know this is a bit bluergh, but does anybody have any POV been in this situation?

I'm due at the Dr's to sort out the 1st 3 months of pill so I don't know about long term with personal experience however as far as I'm aware a friend of mine had the pill as well for the full year she put up with the implant so I imagine it's do-able unless I was misinformed. Not much help I know but I can't see why the Dr would be against it since they do like people to keep their implants in for a reasonable amount of time.

Hello - I had the implant in 2005 and had constant bleeding as well. I stuck it out for about a year, waiting for it to 'settle down', but it never did.

I had it removed, and then tried a series of mini-pills, which had the same problem. I think I just need a proper dose of hormone, or none at all!

A good family planning lady did recommend the coil after the implant, but I moved to a different area, and was basically refused one on the grounds that being 23, wouldn't I be wanting babies soon?! (the first lady was normal, sensible, and entirely correct in understanding that the coil, too, is temporary!).

I was recommended the gyne-fix - a copper-only coil, as opposed to any hormone.

I wasn't able to get it after I moved, but used the natural family planning method instead (DON'T try it if you've already had hiccups with condoms!).

The implant is great, if it works for you - my best mate's on her 3rd! But it doesn't work for me. And as soon as I've had this baby, I'll be going for the gyne-fix coil again! (and I will get it this time!)

Perhaps a coil might work for you?

I am having the same problem. I have had mine for a year and still have constant light bleeding. I am wondering whether to stick with it for the next 2 or to see about having removed and try the coil.

If you look at it the other way round, if you are going to be taking the pill, is there really any point in having the implant?

I have both, at the same time, and have done both before and after having my DS.

I have endometriosis, so not only are irregular periods annoying they are also an excruciating pain. My Gynae recommended the Implant, but Family planning fitted it. They themselves advised that if I didn't settle within 6 months, then to try cerazette on top.

It (both) works wonders for me. No periods, v little pain, my hormones are stable so my depression is also more manageable. It also doesn't matter if I accidently miss the odd pill, I'm still covered for contraception and still period free! woo!!!

I had both, and it drove me nuts. I switched to the patch which has worked like a dream for me. Not many GPs recommend it because it is comparatively expensive.

"was basically refused one on the grounds that being 23, wouldn't I be wanting babies soon"

Hmm I think it's important that you're given the facts re: how long these options work, in what cases they are medically unsuitable, but really - I'm surprised you were "refused" one. My own sister was sterilised at 22 and encountered this sort of attitude for over 4 years - basically medical staff telling her they knew her own mind (and what would or would not be in her future) better than herself. Having listened to her rants for the last 10 years on the issue (she's never regretted her decision for a moment) my ears prick up with indignation on your behalf at reading what you wrote!
