To think that it is possible to identify oneself as the subject of a derogatory post?

Has it ever happened to anyone? I was thinking of the museum visiting debacle thread. Surely if the self absorbed mum of one reads this she will recognise herself?

OP posts:
emeraldgirl1 · 21/03/2011 16:36

I've changed some vital details... the price and the wait time were as stated though!! :)

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 21/03/2011 16:40

No, probably not. People often don't recognise their own behaviour although they have 20/20 vision when it comes to that of others.

CadleCrap · 21/03/2011 16:44

I've often thought that, but I always open threads such as " I can't believe what this Mum did" etc with the thought "hope that is not me!!

hildathebuilder · 21/03/2011 16:46

I have seen myself referred to by a poster on here. And I didn't say what was alleged but it was still clearly me with the other detail included. I was a bit more careful for a bit, but I didn't take offence at what had been said, I actually found it funny

not a rl moan no.

i do, however, read general mner complaints about other, anonymous mners, and I always think they mean me.

And I'm reasonably sure that in this way I have identified several mners who think I'm a twat. Grin

PeterAndreForPM · 21/03/2011 17:44

hec, I have never seen any derogatory comments about you

seen loads about me, however, and much of the time it is blatant which I suppose is better than snide Smile

moonstonezoe · 21/03/2011 17:45

I am glad emeraldgirl. Being fairly new here I was being a bit naive! Hope it works out for you and your friend.

OP posts:
HecateTheCrone · 21/03/2011 17:46

nothing by name, but whenever those threads crop up about annoying mners or annoying types, I just know they are describing me.

Haven't seen anything about you. I too would prefer blatent, however. Someone starting a thread called 'Hecate is a twat' is far better than someone saying they hate posters who overuse emoticons, or who have opinions on everything, or are always here.

babyapplejack · 21/03/2011 17:51

If I write something about someone in RL, I namechange and also change the sex(es) and age(s) mine and their children. I hope that the one person I have whinged about on her (who has really upset me with their behaviour) has not identified themself as the subject of my posts!).

If anyone started a thread about how much they disliked people who had Keanu Reeves mugs I would feel sure it was about me Grin

Overreactionoftheweek · 21/03/2011 20:53

mrskarwash where can I get these magical mugs?! I want one!

SnowdropsMakeMeSmile · 21/03/2011 20:57

Hecate, I think there was a "Hecate is a twat" thread a while ago wasn't there? That was deleted before you saw it?

I think you're great [sycophant]

and to answer OP ys there areobvious scenarios whereby if the moan-ee read it it would be bloody obvious it was about them.

springydaffs · 21/03/2011 21:11

I change the details so much so as not to identify myself/others that in the end it makes me look like a liar and doesn't ring true. I am obviously crap at lying as I can't keep up with them - you've got to have a good memory and tie up all the ends.

QuintessentialShadows · 21/03/2011 21:13

I have once. Not derogatory though. I just recognized the scenario.

smashingtime · 21/03/2011 21:22

I've just googled the thread title of one of my old threads and it came straight up! I imagine as the situation was quite unique that the people I was talking about would easily identify themselves. Slightly concerned, but hope it might make them think about their behaviour {still a problem grrrr}

Giggle78 · 21/03/2011 21:47

It happened to me.

Someone on mumsnet wrote in a telly thread "she's so thick and he's so wet". Which was in regard to me and my husband.

I'm not thick. I just did a silly thing - which wasn't even bad and lots of people who go on the show do the same thing!!!

At least I got on the show and met Davinia - I just lost a million quid in the process!!

Giggle78 · 21/03/2011 21:48

Oh and my husbands not wet. But I can see how he came across as wet at the time!!!

matchesmatchesnevertouch · 21/03/2011 21:50

Someone I know in RL is on babycentre (not stalking her, just mentioned she was on there and as our DC are the same age we are on the same birth club. She has pics of her DC on there so I know which poster she is.

It does make me laugh when I come across some of her posts because she has a tendency to lie about stuff, or boast about how her DS is "the best at xx out of all of his little friends" I've never mentioned I've seen her on there.

MN though, no,but there was some kind of Pizza Express debacle wasn't there?

Hassled · 21/03/2011 21:54

Yes, the Pizza Express Car Crash - basically MNer complaining about behaviour of a group of women and their uncontrolled children who trashed a Pizza Express/were rude to staff/other crimes I can't remember. And then one of the aforementioned women popped up to say "how very dare you".

And there was an insane thread about someone throwing a football at the OP's cat which was innocently sat on a fence. Cue lots of "What a nutter! Why would anyone do that?" posts. And the football-thrower arrived and fessed up. I think the cat had been crapping in her garden for years or somthing and she'd lost her rag.

NewPathways · 21/03/2011 21:58

oooh! Any thread links where this has happened....

Not that I enjoy scandal or gossip. No, never! Grin

PeterAndreForPM · 21/03/2011 21:58
Grin
matchesmatchesnevertouch · 21/03/2011 22:01

There was another one a few years ago.

I can't remember the actual content of the thread but someone came on in a very suss way and said they were the person being complained about.

It wasn't very realistic though, and both the OP and the alleged offender had a typing quirk with their question marks where they typed them:

  • like this ?

instead of

  • like this?

The OP took mass umbrage at accusations of trolling and I don't remember what happened in the end!
