fence sitters and less fanatical\more wobbly anti vaxers ?

ZdoggMD and Dr Harry rapping "Immunize !" to promote vaccination.

The message is the same as most other "skeptics" or pro science people, but the rap comes with large doses of non threatening humour and to me at least doesn't reek of snark.

Delivered by the sexiest thing in scrubs that I have seen for a very long time. (on this point I expect universal agreement at least (= )

I get that it won't sway people who are very fixed in their position, but all the same I'm really impressed with how this could wiggle past defensiveness of the less concreted into place non vaxers by not fitting the "shouty" mold. And they are probably the majority I think.

Am I being unreasonable in thinking this could really have some influence ?

I'd love to think it would influence fence sitters. Our DD has had every vax possible but, some people I know refuse to have their children done Sad.
Sorry, YABU about either one being the sexiest thing in scrubs. That accolade belongs to the gorgeous Thai doctor who had to lance the boil on my fanjo.

TorcherQueenie · 21/03/2011 08:58

Thats brilliant Grin I really would hope it would persuade people to vax as it could save a childs life.

Makingaminime · 21/03/2011 09:16

Aaah that had nothing to do with carpet cleaners. Your OP makes more sense now. Blush

snapdragonss · 21/03/2011 10:22

@kreechers

Well that's nice. Dr Wonderful comes into your life not when you have a slight sniffle and apart from a pink nose you look devastatingly good, no, he comes into your life when you have a boil on your fanjo.

However you are being VVVVVVU about ZdoggMD not being the sexiest thing in scrubs since George Clooney flashed across my screen in the first episode of ER (;

OP posts:
kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/03/2011 10:24

Yep, and not only the hugest fanjoboil seen in Bangkok nursing home, I had to swing my leg out like a cowboy.
OP, GC is not all that, Dr Greene was the hotbod on ER.

snapdragonss · 21/03/2011 12:02

"OP, GC is not all that, Dr Greene was the hotbod on ER."

Shock Sacrilege !!!!

Can we at least agree that vaccinating parents get the sexier heroes of the hours. Let us not forget the silky curls of Goldacre.

Although must admit, Wakefield is not exactly stonking competition.

OP posts:
bubbleymummy · 21/03/2011 12:25

Well not everyone who decides against some/all vaccines bases their decision on Dr Wakefield's work :)

Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 12:26

How amusing that you think of yourself as sceptical.

Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 12:28

and hopefully people would not base a decision to vaccinate on a rap song

but then, marketing knows no bounds

Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 12:32

that is the stupidest thing I've seen today and I only watched half of it

people would have to be vacant beyond belief to be swayed by that

Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 12:33

I'm going to post again just for the hell of it

re would you

wakefeld is my man, lovely

kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/03/2011 12:55

Oh dear.

snapdragonss · 21/03/2011 13:33

"people would have to be vacant beyond belief to be swayed by that"

Yeah I can see how it is hard to be impressed with ZDoggMD's rap when anti vaxers have intellectual heavy weights like Jenny McCarthy as one of their higher profile message bearers.Grin

I think perhaps you underestimate (or not, given the 4 post jumpy up and downy response) the power of the musical message.

While I do not wish to imply that ZDoggMD (blessed be his pecs) is quite in the same league (yet) as this

I do think he has hit on a medium that thanks to appearing frivolous at first glance, does have the power to influence less fixed mindsets, because defenses will be down upon viewing something so "non threatening".

OP posts:
Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 13:59

what a depressing thought -- "it does have the power to influence"

i would absolutely stand by my assessment Grin

either you are of fixed mindset yourself or it has already swayed you, which I wouldn't be that proud of tbh

snapdragonss · 21/03/2011 14:47

Oh I swayed when my son was five (he is ten now)

I was anti vax up till then.

And then there was a measles outbreak not nearly enough away far from where I live, and my fear found it had a competitive situation going on.

Anti vax lost.

What makes this video interesting to me is that I know how my anti vax stance was formed, what influenced it and just how much it had in common with the bulk of my anti vaxing peers.

Yes, I think this video would have crept under our defenses to some degree and made our already non militant anti vax state have a bit of a wobble.

I think it would have softened me up at least for being more open to listening to the skeptic offerings on the subject.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if ZDoggMD was well aware of that potential when he came up with the project. I think he has probably taken a good look at the internal creation of a mainstream anti vax stance on an individual level, and worked out the best route to seek the chinks in it.

I repeat what I said before, I don't think it will have any impact on the people with a firmly fixed, if not militant, position on the issue. I doubt much would.

The thing is, IME the militant tend to be in the minority, which is why they are probably not much of a priority when it comes to designing pro vax campaigns. Makes sense that he would tailor the mode of the message to target the bulk in the middle ground, rather than the extreme fringe.

My position is not fixed, in the sense that if new accurate evidence, from reliable sources, backed by credible studies were to point to little benefit and significant risk associated with vaccines, then I would stop using them.

OP posts:
Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 14:48

If people are really swayed by this they are really vacant. It's ludicrous.

Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 14:50

It's the health of your children for heaven's sake. this is an appalling attempt to persuade frightned and unsure people to make an important decision about the health of their children by means of a. defamation and b. mendacity, once you've stripped away the celebrity and the tune.

Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 14:51

And, snapdragon, if you were really interested you'd find plenty to make you worry. But you haven't looked (except on youtube?Hmm) so you won't.

silverfrog · 21/03/2011 14:52

oh, is it laugh at non-vaxxers time again?

and so soon?

yes, hysterically funny, OP.

I expect I'll be laughing right up until my dd's next health assessment Hmm

Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 14:53

I didn't look at the second link.. is it the ghastly one about JM and her child, OP?

Gooseberrybushes · 21/03/2011 14:55

Oh. No it's not. Thank goodness.
