To be amazed at how much more expensive...

I know this has probably been done to death... and it's totally obvious but I have just done a weekly shop at Waitrose instead of my usual at Tesco. I cannot believe how much more expensive it is. Some to the products are a good £1 if not more extra, and loads of little things are like 50p more. Sorry this is really boring....but WHY is Waitrose so expensive? I admit it is a calmer shopping expereince, a nice ambiance, polite staff but SO pricey

crystal queen

There are 3 waitrose stores in Scotland.....

We don't however get ocado.

I love the ambience in Waitrose but because I eat lots of preprepared food (go on shoot me now) I find Sainsbury's/ M&S better for normal shopping. I go to Waitrose if I"m cooking.

LurkingBeagle · 19/03/2011 11:48

I really like Waitrose, but I LOVE AnswersinHaiku! Brilliant.

My big treat of the week is to schlepp around Waitrose buying lots of gorgeous nibbles - just me at the weekend so lots of gorgeous nibbly things from the deli and patisserie. I only go to Tesco for orange Club biscuits and Findus crispy cheese pancakes Blush and it's hellish so I get out of there as quickly as possible.

I was in tesco, looking for some pork with any any kind of welfare guarantee. I failed.
The packets say; "This meat was produced according to the welfare standards that Tesco requires from its suppliers".

Indeed. Hmm

And that is why I go to Waitrose.

Just so people know - Ocado is not the same as Waitrose delivery.

Waitrose pay better, and actually train their staff. They are polite and helpful - even when I nearly had a breakdown in their shop about them no longer stocking vegetarian chocolate mouses.

We do Tesco delivery for heavy stuff, Waitrose for veg/meat/cheese and really good local Co-op for treats like chocolate and cake.

Does anyone get Morrisons? They are one of our nearest supermarkets but just stock wierd stuff and our entire local shop stinks of fish - I can't bear going in the place!

NoWayNoHow · 19/03/2011 12:09

vj32, I had no idea that Ocado wasn't Waitrose delivery?!? Just assumed that it was because all the products are Waitrose? So what's the difference?

Also, I don't know if there was an inference in your post about Ocado staff NOT being trained/polite/helpful, but if there was, I just thougt that I should add that every single delivery I've ever had from Ocado, the driver has been unfailingly polite, pleasant and wonderful to deal with. I also encounter this in the Waitrose shops too - just a whole different type of customer service!!

ihatethecold · 19/03/2011 12:11

hear! hear! no way no how.
.. ocado have been very polite and punctual, they ring if they are going to be 10 mins late.
morrisons is very good for fruit n veg, meat is not so good though..

To answer my own question!

'waitrose currently have 2 pretty big chickens (1.6Kg without giblets) on offer for £7 the pair. I thought that was actually pretty good value as their chickens usually taste really good.'

Come and try to do a weekly shop in Belgium ladies, Waitrose is so cheap compared to here. I can't often get a 1.6 kg chicken, the largest is normally about 1.4kg - and that will cost me in excess of 12 euros.

Ironically, it is cheaper for me to drive to the British shop, and buy the Waitrose essentials range that they have started stocking, than it is to buy comparable things in the Belgian supermarket.

Waitrose one week, yum
Asda the next, basics cheap
Wilkinsons too, soap!

Hmm, does that work? I think the punctuation may mean it fails. I love Wilkinsons, get all the cleaning and bathroom stuff there - often half the price. Asda for other basics, but not for meat, cheese, olives. Loud and convivial experience, long queuing, fine for fortnightly.

Waitrose for the fortnightly treat of sliced ham with mustard, good convenience food, perfectly good value chicken, good own brand bread, relaxing vibe, yes it's posher, small and pleasant. And I can scan my own food and no queues.

How very anal I sound!

iloverhubarbcrumble · 19/03/2011 13:19

And agree, Booths is absolutely great, an even smaller chain only in north of England (?) I think. Not sure if Waitrose is nationwide or more a southern delicacy?

LurkingBeagle · 19/03/2011 13:29

Mostly southern rhubarb, but going national I think. I live in Cheshire and now have 2 Waitrose within 10 mins drive, which is fab! (When I first moved north my mum was genuinely concerned about "coping" without a Waitrose...) Hmm
