That people phone me from blocked numbers and do not leave a message pisses me off

I am working from home today, I needed a couple of hours of head down, no distraction worktime

My home phone and mobile are on and if people call, I've been checking out who they are before deciding if I need to answer.

Just had a witheld number call my mobile, then home phone, then mobile and lastly home phone - they haven't left any messages

If you need to speak to me, leave a message - I will check them and call you back

If I was in the office, I wouldn't be able to answer mobile anyway.

Usual culprit is school - so now I'm worried that something has happened to DD

Why don't people leave you a voicemail - aargh

Calm down dear

Call the school and ask if they tried to call you, my DD's school is the same, number withheld and can't leave messages in case someone else hears it (yes, really)

Otherwise I really wouldn't care

Bogeyface · 18/03/2011 14:28

I hate this too.

School tend to ring the home number and i ignore it as I do all witheld numbers. Then straight away my mobile rings, so I know its school and answer it but they do atleast leave a message on my mobile if I dont get to it.

I had a day last week when my mum rang from work (a library for their number is on the same witheld system as the schools) and she rang and rang and rang. I ignored it as I do, and she didnt leave a message and then got distinctly snotty when she called me from home. I pointed out that if she had left a message I would have called her back and she KNOWS why I dont answer! Its because for some reason in the last year our junk calls have gone through the roof at several every day Angry.

YANBU at all

Bogeyface you probably know about TPS already but just in case you don't, you can register with them to try to stop calls, or at least cut them down significantly

Why are schools withheld?

Bogeyface · 18/03/2011 15:05

Yep, we are on TPS but alot of the calls are from insurance companies and solicitors since I had an accident 18 months ago, and they have been passed on my details. Pisses me off but there aint alot I can do about it unfortunately.

I got alot when I did my insurance last year and made the mistake of using a comparison site, even though I ticked the "no sales calls" box. One company even called before I had finished the quote retrieval, they got short shrift!

Thanks though.

I dont know about why schools are, but here all of the LA numbers are on the same system and all start with the same numbers, so I suspect they just have it across the board. Not good when you think how many people bar witheld numbers so the phone doesnt ring at all.

scaredoflove · 18/03/2011 15:42

It was the school and DD had had a fall (disabled)

They gave up phoning me and called my mum - why can't they just leave a message? I would have checked it as soon as it arrived

DD is fine, just a bit shaken and she can't believe I was called to collect - especially as by the time I got there, school had 15 mins left

Have asked them (again) to please leave a message next time

And I've lost an hours work time humph

I think they are witheld as they are on a switchboard system, that's what I was told

Just remember

  1. If it is an important call they will leave a message.

So forget about anyone who doesn't, because it is not important.

TheDogsBollocks · 18/03/2011 15:46

oh Blush just read what happened.

Well silly people should have left a message!

sayanything · 18/03/2011 15:52

School should have absolutely left a message.

But generally, if the number is blocked and there's no message it means I don't have to return the call which is a very good thing in my book.

ibbydibby · 18/03/2011 16:00

On the other hand....

Was involved in organising an after school PTA fund raising event last year which involved children staying in school for about 2 hours after end-of-school. A child was taken ill, and I phoned his home number, that had been given on the permission slip. There was no reply from home so I did not want to waste time leaving a message but immediately tried the mobile bumber. Again no reply. Tried the home number again. No reply so concluded parents were out. In desperation called the poorly child's neighbours (their children also at event) - neighbour said he knew they were in (had been speaking to them just minutes earlier), and would go and knock. Dad of poorly child turned up 5 minutes later asking why we hadn't left a message on the phone as he was working and never answers the home phone when working at home.

The thing is, telephone numbers are requested by schools etc on the expectation that they will be able to get hold of you on that number. If they leave a message they have no way of knowing if you have got it, whether you are acting on it, if to carry on trying other numbers etc etc.

We have reduced our nuisance calls by 90% I would say, by registering with TPS, so suggest you try registering if not already done so. I do sympathise at not wanting to be disturbed by nuisance calls but also sympathy also with school in trying to get hold of you.

Hope DD is ok!

ibbydibby · 18/03/2011 16:01

Oops! For "bumber" read "number"..

GabbyLoggon · 18/03/2011 16:04

Scaredoflove. some geezer has been trying to get me in the evening on a blocked number.

I sang an upbeat version of a ballad on my answerphone. That will give them something to think about Maybe cracked eardrums too.
