David Lloyd Children's membership

Suz1000 · 16/03/2011 16:28

My local David Lloyd club expects us to pay £37.50 per month for any child over 5. This has gone up 4 fold since I joined as it was perviously a privately owned club. Given that we pay for swimming, tennis etc on top of this I think it is extortionate. Has anyone else taken this up with David Lloyd and managed to negotaite a reduced monthly fee?

So what do you get for the £37.50?
My gym membership is that price and I get classes pool, gym, free hire of courts (tennis and squash) and a reduction on courses, if your child gets that then it is fair if not...

Suz1000 · 16/03/2011 16:36

The £37.50 is just for the kids - for which they can use the swimming pool and the park area plus there are some after school activities - that we don't use. My husband and I pay an additional £150 for our membership.

That is a lot for a child membership IMO

I would look for another gym.

MaisyMooCow · 16/03/2011 16:41

Are there time restrictions as to when you can bring kids or are they allowed in anytime?

Suz1000 · 16/03/2011 16:50

The kids have to be in the gym before 4pm in the week - which I am OK with. My gripe is that I am paying nearly £80 a month for the 2 children - plus swimming and tennis. I thought the going rate was about £15 per month?

I pay an additional £7.50 at David Lloyd for my DD and there is a complete children's timetable with free activities. How many children do you have?

MaisyMooCow · 16/03/2011 16:55

I get the feeling they price it high to put parents off to be honest. They like to appear family friendly but probably worry that other members will complain if it has too many kids 'getting in the way'.

I pay £15 for each DC at the local hotel (no where near as good as David Lloyd but it does have indoor and outdoor tennis and swimming) - DH and I pay a joint fee £110. However, I prefer the gym at the local public leisure centre and DC now prefer the pool there so I won't be a member for long!

I am surprised that you have to pay extra for tennis and swimming!

Does seem a lot for the DC - maybe they are actively trying to discourage children? I guess it would be reasonable value if you used the after-school activities?

Suz1000 · 16/03/2011 17:01

Which David Lloyd are you a member of. I have 2 children and its £37.50 for each of them.

Local leisure centre was £14 a month for shokk gym and swimming and off peak badminton and table tennis for children.

I think they are also going to do a membership for £30 a month which will include swimming lessons.

verytellytubby · 16/03/2011 17:02

I pay it for my 3. We use it a lot and kids do the activities after school.

fluffygal · 16/03/2011 17:04

I pay £11.50 for DS1 and he goes swimming every other week and does multisports 1-2 times a week. My David Lloyd are very child friendly and have regular family nights. Only joined recently and very happy with them.

YANBU to think £37.50 is extortionate, OH's membership is only £42!

CHOOGIRL · 16/03/2011 17:38

Suze have sent a PM.

BTW Just checked my last mail from DL which says you can add children between £7.50 and £41.80 per month.

aliceliddell · 16/03/2011 18:24

I joined DL as they had the only local powerplates (recommended for my disability). The pp was the only thing Iwanted to use. They declined to give me a concessionary rate despite all evidence of Incapacity Benefit etc inc. attending in wheelchair. Virgin gyms have same policy. Local council gym now has them (yay) but just reduced physio instructors by 50% (not yay). Is this what we can look forward to in the big society?

grumpypants · 16/03/2011 18:31

We just joined and pay 11.50 per month per child. Wondering if it is the same as fluffy - mine just dd multiskills and loved it.

pawsnclaws · 16/03/2011 18:40

That does sound expensive, I pay £110 pm with Nuffield for 2 adults and 3 children which is for use of the gym, classes and two pools. We have to pay extra for the creche and any child activities such as football or swimming lessons. Not sure if and when we will have to pay more for the children depending on age though.

KAMsMama · 03/04/2019 00:40

grumpypants and fluffygal - I’m just about to join and have been quoted £37.5 for DD, can I ask how old your kids are perhaps that influenced the price we will mostly use it at wknds so i’d like to negotiate the price if possible before signing up. Thanks

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 03/04/2019 04:34

I pay £28 a month for DSs swimming lessons, that includes a lesson a week and pool membership so he can swim for free at any other time with a free accompany adult, and use of the play area) cheap crèche facilities. I doubt understand what you're actually paying that amount for
