to have put this spider in a jar?

Sitting here minding my own business, late night MNing in Australia, feel something tickle my leg. Brush it off, feel it scuttle. So I switch the side lamp on, and then see a shadow on my sofa. Tis a spider! but which one?

So I get more light, directly on it - can't decide if it's a grey house spider or a white tail - so now it's in a jar with the lid on so it can't escape.

I still can't work out whether or not it's a white tail, and despite all the reassuring research that says their venom isn't really all that dangerous and you are unlikely to get an infected bite, I still don't want to take the chance.

I'm not into bashing spiders of dubious reputation (although I'll happily kill a redback) - so what shall I do with it? I'm not releasing it in the house, it's the middle of the night here, will it be all right in the jar until the morning and then I can take it down the garden and chuck it out for the birds.

I should say that I've just seen a Rabbit Rat on Google images, not in my English country sitting room!

thumbwitch · 16/03/2011 23:20

aw, that looked quite cute, unlike the mole rat which definitely doesn't! but I don't think we have those either.

Definitely no camel spiders, apparently - I checked. Unless some Aussie military bring some back from Iraq we should be quite safe from them.

Numbats are lovely! but I still want a wombat... need to move to real country for that though.

Naked Mole Rats are cute - they may be asleep at the mo but when awake they're quite amusing.

There are other, fluffier creatures on that site's webcams by the way, including a pair of adorable pandas and some stunning ferrets (we have one of those too, as well as the 3 dogs!).

I could go with the idea of a wombat too, very cute.

I wonder what the Landlord would say.... :o

Why did I even click on this?!

This thread is making me feel quite faint! Never. Ever. EVER going to Australia!

I thought I was quite brave calmy putting a glass over a large (though probably not in your eyes!) spider and and calling DH to take it outside!

I did once trap a HUGE spider under a pint glass one night when DH was away- It could hardly fit under the glass (width/ legs-wise) As it was in the middle of the living room, I decided I couldn't risk walking round it all evening, as I was bound to kick it over. Mustered all my courage to slip paper under and take it to the door- I swear it was hopping mad! Got to the door and realised I had no hands to open it, so threw spider, glass and all, out the cat flap. of course, glass smashed, was worried about dogs' feet, so waited half an hour (and had Wine to calm my nerves) then went to clear glass. Imagine my horror to find spider and his big brother on the doorstep! Had to use the front door for a few days after that!

I take my hat off to you fearless beastie tamers!

why did i read this thread???? now have to check every room and under the beds before i go to sleep.

i try to help my fear of spiders but it seems to be getting worse. i was bit by one on holiday last year. it turned my ankle a lovely shade of yellow/purple. i survived it wasn't that bad. bit by unknown vietnamese jungle spider = funny story and scar. see >2cm spider in NI = shite myself call DH make him take at least 3 lamp posts up the street.

DP once caught a (huge fucking)spider under a glass and decided to test out his laser pen on it.

The spider was unresponsive to it despite it being a high grade green laser...which has lead me to believe that spiders are in the same league as cockroaches

thumbwitch · 17/03/2011 01:29

jooly, um, aren't you a vet?? what are you going to do when someone brings in their pet tarantula? Grin
I did lol at your spider and his big brother though...

maighdlin - ouch!

Valpol - was he hoping that the spider would start smoking and then burst into flames or something? I didn't think laser pens had enough oomph for that.

thumbwitch, it's true, I am Blush. I have treated tarantulas in the past, but they are almost furry, so I can cope with them, and more importantly they are not in my house , waiting till I'm asleep to leap out at me Grin

WassaAxolotl · 17/03/2011 19:11

Hello again.
Yeah, the spider was definitely dead. You know that way they curl up when they die? We hopefully took it outside and exposed it to fresh air, but it was too late.

This thread is making me itch!

thumbwitch · 17/03/2011 20:27

Well spidey was deposited outside where it instantly scuttled under a leaf; here's hoping it prefers the outdoors lifestyle now.
Didn't get dropped on last night so that's a good thing!
