I am not an artist, is this even possible? How do I go about it?

I have had the closest thing il ever have to an....well the word for a good idea.

Its an idea for an art exhibition, a set of photographs of very beautiful and intimate photos depicting the relationships between family members. I dont want to go into to much detail until ive done it.

If I can manage to create this, how do i share it with the world? i am not an artist at all, i have no links with the art world. how would i get it shown and maybe exhibited?

its the most creative thing to come out of my brain ever, i would really like to make it work if i can

thanks

KB - why not join a photographer's forum or group and ask them these sort of questions?

As a rank amateur photographer I have been taking photos for over a decade now and am still nowhere near professional standard - it's more complex and technical than it looks and there's post-processing too. Go for it, by all means, but be prepared for the photos to look nothing like you pictured them, especially if they're self portraits.

Oh - and be prepared to spend absurd amounts of money. It's not a cheap hobby.

KnittedBreast · 16/03/2011 13:19

i fear that makes cakes!!

I think it's family members having a poo.

MissPenteuth · 16/03/2011 13:33

Grin Shirley My first thought was "is it bumholes? It's bumholes, isn't it?".

squeakytoy · 16/03/2011 13:36

Its still something i want to pursue, and if it dousnt sell i will still have something amazing at the end of it

Thats the right way to look at it.. thats how I started off too, and you dont need the best camera, or the best equipment, but you do need to know about lighting, depth of field, and editing too, to be able to create what you want.

It would be nice actually to have a photography board on Mumsnet, as I am sure there would be a lot of interest. Learning from others is the best way to get anywhere and you cant just look at a photo and think "I can do that", because there is a lot more to it.

ShirleyKnot · 16/03/2011 13:37

If it aint bumholes, I'll eat my hat.

solooovely · 16/03/2011 13:45

Is it feet? You feet next to your childs feet etc?

KnittedBreast · 16/03/2011 13:56

bum holes? really? why would you think of bum holes? i do worry about some people on here....

no its not feet....

Ok, i wanted to set up a cam corder or security camera over my bed and film for one night with out the covers on. I hoped to take a succcession of pictures from the over night recording in black and white of the intimate shapes and entanglements of two parents and their children sleeping.

I think you can tell a lot about the family relationships by the way in which you all sleep together and this can be a telling sign of you all act with one antoher individually and as a family unit.

I wanted the pics shot in black and white and as a succession of photos depicting the positions through out the night.

please dont mock me too much, this is the best idea i have ever had or will ever have.

I had originally thought of having a succesion of photos from different familes, one parent, gay asian african etc to highlight the differences in sleeping arrangements and cultural differences but i thought that finding other famililes that would allow me to take such personal pictures of initimate moments as they sleep would be too difficult.

i await my flaming

Aaahh it sounds sweet!

squeakytoy · 16/03/2011 14:02

Its a great idea, but would be very tricky to get a good shot, simply because the film would be too grainy I would think.

I would also think it might just cross the line in people finding it acceptable to have images of people in bed with children.

I KNOW .. I KNOW .. its a natural thing, it shouldnt be viewed that way, but its just the way the world seems to be these days.

Tee2072 · 16/03/2011 14:03

you mean like this?

Happymm · 16/03/2011 14:05

Sounds lovely, but I can't sleep without covers on, so you'd never get any "sleeping" patterns! :o

KnittedBreast · 16/03/2011 14:05

even though i would make sure they knew it was my family? ie the man in the picure is the father?

i was planning on attching the camcorder to the ceiling over the ebd tilted down over us....

(thanks for the pm squeaky :) )

RustyRainbow · 16/03/2011 14:08

I like the sound of it too. I'm guessing you'll need to suspend the camera somehow and use the night shot...

Have you considered using a digital video camera instead and then taking screen shots from it onto your comp instead of a set of stills?

Don't you just know there'll be an element of MN now desperately googling it to show you how unoriginal it is Hmm

squeakytoy · 16/03/2011 14:08

It could be misconstrued, thats the thing. :(

Did my reply to the PM make sense btw? :)

KnittedBreast · 16/03/2011 14:08

TEE- yes but without covers, so you can see how the family actually sleeps in relation to each other.

for example even when we have children in the bed dp and i entwine our legs together, the rest of the pictures would show how we move about and sleep together over the period of the night.

the picture you showed looked very staged, like they are pretending to be asleep- this would be real ifyswim

squeakytoy · 16/03/2011 14:11

I could get some great shots if I did this with me and husband.

There would be me smacking him in the mush (it was an accident!!!!!)... Grin

There would be him with his leg in the air farting Angry

Then there would be the dog, lying right in the middle, on his back, taking up more room than me or husband.

KnittedBreast · 16/03/2011 14:11

Rustrainbow im waiting for the torresnt!

Squeaky- i really dont want to end up looking like a peado or anything. thats why i need to be sure the over all effect of the pics are beautiful and soft. I understood your reply just fine! Thabk you :)

I think its a great idea, and it could work, but getting a decent quality shot would be quite difficult in that sort of light, and that would be my main concern.

I do a lot of shooting in black and white, and it has to be very sharp for it to make a decent quality print. In very poor light you would get a lot of noise on the shot, which is difficult to remove from the image, even with a good knowledge of photoshop.

KnittedBreast · 16/03/2011 14:17

i was planning on keeping the lights on. or having my friend come upstairs once we were asleep to put the light on.

id also have to be sure that dps willy didnt slip our in his sleep, and no erections photos!!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 16/03/2011 14:17

Sounds beautiful. As someone who co sleeps with a 3yo who thinks she's a rucksack I can see how you'd get some lovely pictures.

BongoWinslow · 16/03/2011 14:17

I like the idea and even if it's been done in a general sense, that doesn't mean there's no value in doing it again because it's also about how it's done.

I agree with squeaky about the graininess issues.

As for whether it might be misconstrued, sod that. It's lovely and natural and if some, few, people in the world will misconstrue it that's their problem and you shouldn't censor yourself on that basis.

Hmm, that turned into a bit of a rant Blush.
It sounds lovely. Have a crack at it, but I agree with others - do a photography course or join a photo club first to get some skills as it is harder than it looks. Hire equipment - you need an SLR camera and at least one decent lens. I'm almost certain you can hire these. I've hired lens before.

Do it for yourself, see how it turns out then think about exhibiting. And Flikr is a good place to start, particularly for some feedback.

KnittedBreast · 16/03/2011 14:20

i had a look at some hire equiptment, 60 a day and a 500 deposit!! wow.

i feel poorer already

Lucelulu · 16/03/2011 14:23

why don't you try a small camera of the type used in birdboxes - link to a computer you can capture a photo at regular intervals through the night (eg every 5 seconds). They're good in the dark and yes the images are grainy but they have a certain quality of their own - then you end up with multiples like a comic strip which can be quite beautiful too?
