to dislike WWF Wrestling?

Someone bought DS1, who is six, some WWF trading cards. I am a bit Hmm about this because I dislike the WWF / WWE organisation.

I don't know much about it, I confess, but I dislike:

  1. the fact that it pretends to be / looks real, but is in fact all staged
  2. the fact that it glamorises fighting and agression
  3. the fact that it all seems to be about showing off stupidly unrealistic bodies for both men and women.

I don't want this to be something DS aspires to and don't think he's old enough yet to see it for what it is.

So, anyone know better - AIBU?

er,i dont have a problem with it....my dc can take or leave it really

but enjoy the control over your ds,and his likes and interests....it isnt something you'll have for much longer Grin

IME lots of little boys go through a stage of liking WWE.

Ds 9 LOVES it and watches it religiously. He asked why the men have such big muscles and dh told him very simply that most of them take steroids and the majority of 'real' men aren't like that.

We talked about it being like Panto - not real and more like dance as it is all rehearsed.

He's liked it for the last 2 years and won't like it forever. It's just another stage he's going through. I wouldn't stop a daughter of mine playing with Barbie dolls as they have unrealistic bodies and so I wouldn't stop ds playing with his wrestling figures.

I would MUCH rather he focused on WWE than on Call of Duty which is what an awful lot of his peers play with which quite frankly horrifies me!

Crystyclear · 15/03/2011 18:26

don't underestimate how easy kids see through all the mad, unreality of WWE/WWF/WCW. i loved it when i was a kid because it was so much larger than life/pantomime/soap opera.

not sure what age i got into it, poss not quite as little as six, but it was hilarious twaddle.

the only thing to be wary of is practising moves on siblings. even though we knew it wasn't real and were trying to work out the best fake moves, sometimes...

the pot plant got nailed. Grin

valiumredhead · 15/03/2011 18:29

It really is hilarious, I quite often watch it with ds - we laugh at all the grunting and groaning and 'fakeness' of the whole thing! Grin

MosEisley · 15/03/2011 18:38

Thanks for your replies. Some good points.

The thing is, I wouldn't want a daughter of mine playing with Barbie dolls. I certainly wouldn't buy one. But I would have a similar question in my mind if someone else bought her one.

To be fair, they haven't even watched WWE/F yet and they are wrestling like pros right now!

yes staged but i wouldnt want to be in the ring with them and things do go wrong which is why they have warnings,dp & kids love it.

IQuiteLikeVodka · 15/03/2011 19:31

My son (8) is OBSESSED with WWE wrestling and has been for quite a while, he knows never to copy what they do and he knows it is staged, although he didn't want to believe that for a while. He turns 9 in April and he has asked me to get him some fake tan for his birthday Grin. We take it in good humour though and have a laugh at the total RIDICULOUSNESS of the wrestlers!!

IQuiteLikeVodka · 15/03/2011 19:32

Although he does throw himself off the sofas too much!

ddubsgirl · 15/03/2011 19:36

its a soap for sport lol, wouldnt mind thier wages tho lol!

Chil1234 · 15/03/2011 19:37

Ah wrestling. Giant Haystacks. Big Daddy. Sad big-bellied bastards in masks, costumes and bizarrely stretchy pants, gurning at the cameras & being urged on to kill their opponent by old ladies sat in front of the TV on Sunday afternoons.... I used to love that as a kid because it was so utterly silly!!! Have things changed much?

Bunbaker · 15/03/2011 19:38

I support WWF. DD wants to adopt a tiger or an elephantGrin

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 15/03/2011 19:42

Its WWE btw :)

MosEisley · 15/03/2011 19:46

Funnily enough we also support the other WWF and have adopted a tiger and an orangutan.

Well I still don't like WWE. Don't like soaps on TV, don't like Barbie, do like saving endangered species. I sound like a right prudish old madam!

Guess I'll have to lighten up and save my lentil-weaving for the evenings.

thanks all

Can I join your club? I don't like wrestling, boxing, blood sports, TV soaps or reality TV, and we are members of the National Trust.

I'll supply the lentils if you bring the knitting needlesGrin

ddubsgirl · 15/03/2011 20:08

nor do i but i dont stop others from watching it,hate footy but hubs watches it.

Mandy2003 · 15/03/2011 20:22

When I was around 12 years old (in the 70s) I was in a junior drama group production at the local theatre.

The matinee at the theatre that day was Old Skool wrestling. On my way from the dressing room to the toilet I got trapped in a corridor between Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks. Gulp! Didn't feel like asking either one of them to back up.

My DS liked WWE/F wrestling as a littley. He also knew it was fake, knew about steriods and knew not to imitate it. He wasn't allowed to have the toys though, and didn't want the cards although he collected all other kinds of cards.

fatlazymummy · 15/03/2011 20:28

It's just a form of entertainment. My kids watch it, I watch it with them, other people like Big brother, Xfactor or whatever.
I also bought my son the models and toys when he was younger, there again I would happily buy my daughter a Barbie doll if she asked.
My Mum always refused to buy me barbie dolls and I resented that a little, so I let my children choose their own toys and interests.

MosEisley · 15/03/2011 20:41

Bunbaker, yes, welcome! Let's grab our knitting needles and lentils and a nice Brew and hide from the wrestling supporters!
