To be shocked at a parent bring to school a Big mac and Fries in for her kid's lunch

I work in a secondary school. Today, we had a year 8 pupil in isolation for persistent bad behaviour. He forgot his lunch and so he called his mum. He asked her to get him a McDonalds - the tutor who was there said No you can't have that in school, so he text his mum in front of the tutor saying he couldn't have it so can he have a ham sandwich.

She dropped it in and the lunch bag stunk. The Vice principal walked into reception and said what's that smell. She opened the bag and found a bottle of coke, and under a ham roll was a big mac and fries.

Now, she couldn't not let him have food so in the end she decided to let him eat it but he had to go into a tiny room on his own so no other kids saw him eat it, and she's sending a letter home to tell mum it's not appropriate.

Needless to say, this is a rather chunky kid.

AIBU to think this parent has some serious issues if she thinks this is acceptable. Appart from anything he was being punished and she's rewarded his bad behaviour.

I think it is a shame when the parents don't work with the school.

we are supposed to be a team.

food should never be a treat or reward anyway.

although - unless the tutor read the text, they don't know if the child actually did text the update or not. they could have asked for onion rings and just said they were cancelling the request!

If it's true its hardly a surprise the kid is badly behaved

stupid fucking parents

saffy85 · 15/03/2011 17:14

YANBU bet he's a right pain in the arse at home too. Bet his mum has no idea why either. It certainly wont be because she indulges his bad behaviour... Hmm

squeakytoy · 15/03/2011 17:16

I dont agree with a school dictating what a child is "allowed" to eat, but the parent sounds a waste of space.

noeyedear · 15/03/2011 17:16

Why didn't they let him have the ham roll and coke and ditch the big mac and fries? He wasn't about to starve, and a ham sandwich is lunch!

PrincessScrumpy · 15/03/2011 17:21

Honestly Laurie it is true - tbh it must have been cold by the time he got it.

The tutor did read the text and watched it being sent then confiscated the phone - he was in isolation so not allowed phone even at break times.

School is a "healthy school" status but we don't dictate food for pack lunches like some primaries do, but seriousl, McDonalds.

I gather from another teacher that he told her he had coke and sweets for breakfast everyday as his mum was in bed in the mornings and they didn't ever have cereal. Sadly I believe him.

poor kid.

coke and sweets for breakfast every day and a parent who doesn't get out of bed in the mornings.

no mystery there about either the robust figure or the bad behaviour Sad

yes. I'm judging.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/03/2011 17:27

poor kid

wasn't doubting you Princess, I was only doubting the kids text - it's good the teacher supervised the text as it confirms for the school that there is some pretty poor parenting going on.

And I'm saying its poor parenting not because of the McDonalds in itself but that the parent brought it in after being told not to.

Fucking stupid mother.
Tho it is a shame if he has coke and sweets for breakfast while his 'mother' is in bed.
