My BIL is engaged to a spanish woman, and we spent the weekend at MIL's, all of us together.

She is very slim, I'd guess a size 6/8. Her skin is glowing and she is stunning, yet her diet perplexes me?

On the first morning, we were all having breakfast, MIL made a fry up for everyone, but I am on a diet so I had special K and some toast. SIL prepared her own breakfast (they are currently staying at MILs while they have some work done on their house), and she had some kind of cheese, can't remember what she said it was, about 10 olives and a slice of ham! Yet she said that my breakfast of Special K and toast was stodgy and apparently English women have 'very strange ideas about nutrition'.

For lunch, she had a chicken salad, but it involved lots of extra virgin olive oil, all over the peppers and a big dollop of salsa. And then for dinner she had chicken smeared in pesto, with green beans in salt, more salsa and a slice of cheese.

How is she so slim??

I didn't have a particuarly healthy weekend in the end, we ended up having a takeaway on the Saturday evening, and SIL wouldn't eat any of it, she wasn't rude, she politely declined but I just find it hypocrytical that she eats all this fatty stuff and made the comment about England having strange ideas about nutrition when I was eating Special K and toast!!

sorry that should say - apart form the benifits of the minerals, vitamins and fibre content.

TrillianAstra · 17/03/2011 22:10

Lots of "such and such a food is bad" on this thread. Chill out guys.

onlion · 17/03/2011 22:10

On a low carbohydrate diet you would just count carbs and pulses are pretty high . Its total rather than type.

TrillianAstra · 17/03/2011 22:10

I am thinking I would rather go and eat with Stealth.

onlion · 17/03/2011 22:12

I dont agree with it but thats how it goes.
Now if I was adjusting insulin bolus' through my insulin pump then it would be a different matter lol

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2011 22:12

onlion · 17/03/2011 22:13

I feel sorry for much maligned carnbohydrates

ivykaty44 · 17/03/2011 22:13

here is a list of pulses and there carbs

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2011 22:13

n1, lentil & apple casserole then deep fried mars bar with my special sprinkles suit you?
What are you up to on Saturday?

onlion · 17/03/2011 22:14

I am pretty clued up about the amounts, thanks

TrillianAstra · 17/03/2011 22:15

Doesn't cocaine make you hyper? So then you'd bounce around and jump up and down and burn lots of calories. So you might end up thinner than you started!

onlion · 17/03/2011 22:15

Best taken with champagne trillian

Quattrocento · 17/03/2011 22:18

The OP's ideas of nutrition are demented, IMO

The OP's SIL has much more of an idea

So, the OP had

Special K (WTF)
Toast

Something for lunch (we know not what but it probably involved carbs)

Takeaway

The OP's SIL had

Cheese, olives and a slice of ham

Chicken salad

Chicken, green beans, salsa and a slice of cheese

Is it any wonder the OP's SIL is slimmer than the OP?

ivykaty44 · 17/03/2011 22:18

fine - just trying to help I will stick to my beans Grin and leave you with your special k with added protein

Kewcumber · 17/03/2011 22:18

"I feel sorry for much maligned carnbohydrates" me too - I have often wondered that - when did carbs become akin to poison? And I'm a fan of the moderate refined carb approach!

I like GI/GL (despite your onjections onlion Wink) becasue I think it more oftenthan not results in a pretty healthy balanced diet.

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2011 22:19

ugh, special kardboard
now a nice weetabix...mmm

onlion · 17/03/2011 22:19

I like GI too but the bloody evidence base is flawed

still recommed it to my patients though

FreeButtonBee · 17/03/2011 22:20

Oi i was taking breakfast so meant heinz baked beans. Calm down people.

I am a "slakins" so do eat lentils chickpeas etc etc

onlion · 17/03/2011 22:21

whatever you do freebutton, DONT go on the atkins diet discussion board... they will stone you for eating them

ivykaty44 · 17/03/2011 22:23

mexican for breakfast is far tastier than heniz or even dalh for breakfast as someone eons ago suggested Indians have curry for breakfast soem good ole real food.

FreeButtonBee · 17/03/2011 22:26

Oh i know, i know onlion. Luckily the lovely mn low carbers are a bit more catholic in their view and accept all race and creeds of low carb-ness.

Personally i find lentils once a week clear my bowels out nicely Wink

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2011 22:28

Can't say your name in my head and it's bugging me!
