To be depressed that we seem to be a nation

of theives and vandals. I mean you can't leave anything around without it being stolen/smashed up or graffittied to crikey.

Are you speaking from experience, or has an article in the DM sparked your hatred?

worraliberty · 15/03/2011 11:53

Well that's a sweeping generalisation.

I think it depends largely on where you live...but I wouldn't say 'We as a nation' just yet Smile

ilovemyhens · 15/03/2011 11:54

It's just young people being 'creative' isn't it? Hmm

ethelina · 15/03/2011 11:54

Are you including yourself in that?

Callisto · 15/03/2011 11:59

I live in a small, rural very prosperous town and there is an amazing amount of vandalism here. Cars keyed, wing mirrors smashed, playground equipment deliberately broken, etc, etc.

So no, I don't think you're being unreasonable or particularly DM to think that as a nation, we have a significant minority who couldn't give a shite about anyone or anything else.

manfromCUK · 15/03/2011 12:12

Actually what triggered it was going to Austria on holiday and finding the toilets hadn't been smashed up, but just as an example, my Sis had an old unwanted bike in the garage of her new house. She leant it up against the fence in the street and it was gone in a few hours. No loss to her but ample demo of the fact that you can't leave anything around.

I also notice all the lorries parked up with doors open so that tea leaves can see they are empty and vans with "no tools stored inside" and/or huge go-away padlocks.

No grafitti in Portsmouth it's one of the reasons I moved here.

Callisto · 15/03/2011 12:16

We have a huge amount of theft too, mainly agricultural and metal.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 15/03/2011 12:19

I can leave my door unlocked and my key in the car, I've never had anything stolen, we have bugger all graffiti and our playground is fully intact, as is our train station etc.

Maybe you just live in a shithole?

MadMommaMemoo · 15/03/2011 12:20

Are you really depressed??

You can get medication from the doctor for that you know!

LDNmummy · 15/03/2011 12:24

TBH I have never understood the negative reaction to grafitti, I like it, its better than grey. Some European countries leave it on trains and walls and it looks great and colourful.

It's way better here than in Ireland. I was amazed when I first moved over here that there were shops displaying things outside - if you did that in Dublin it would be gone straight away.

blackeyedsusan · 15/03/2011 12:29

puffin, now we know who stole the pombears... Grin

GlynisIsFixed · 15/03/2011 12:31

i have no idea if you're right or wrong OP but I love the phrase graffittied to crikey

Grin

t'is way up there on my 'makes me smile' list Grin

WinterOfOurDiscountTents · 15/03/2011 12:32

Dublin is not the whole of Ireland Stromba, and you don't even mean the whole of Dublin. I am in Ireland and see my post above. Hmm

GwendolineMaryLacey · 15/03/2011 12:36

Well I'm not, and I don't suppose anyone else on this thread is either. Assuming that everyone that has posted on this thread lives in Britain then no, I think we can say that we're not a nation of...

And no, Dublin isn't Ireland. Come to my area of Ireland and you won't see a single speck of graffiti.

steamedtreaclesponge · 15/03/2011 12:39

Round where I live, if you put something outside your house it means you don't want it any more and someone will usually come past and take it within a few hours. I've picked up many a nice bit of furniture that way and also got rid of a lot of things. It's like an instant version of freecycle Wink

butterpieify · 15/03/2011 12:43

What Steamed said - it is a "thing" that if you leave something outside your house, it is basically free to a good home. Saves things going in landfill and gives people stuff for free - win win :)

ArfurBrain · 15/03/2011 12:46

''Maybe you just live in a shithole?'' bit harsh!
''are you depressed?'' FFS

I kind of agree with the OP, she didn't say everyone as at fault, but there is no denying some people just don't seem to are much, and some people actively seem to enjoy messing stuff up or helping themselves.

I live in a more run down area of a ''naice' town, very sought after etc.
I tried to organise people to have a clear up of a problem area and only 2 or 3 people out of 30 houses responded. We cleared it up, made it safe and planted up a few bits and pieces - one week latr, it was trashed, fly tipping, dog shit, broken glass, litter etc.

GrendelsMum · 15/03/2011 12:50

I agree with SteamedTreacle and ButterPie - round here, if you put a thing outside your house with no label, it means it's to take away. If you put a thing outside your house with a price on, it's to buy.

In fact, I've heard people complain that things haven't been taken away.

GrendelsMum · 15/03/2011 12:51

Sad about your hard work, though, ArfurBrain Sad
