...in terms of natural disasters.

Having a discussion with friends and relatives about the terrible state of Japan, I am really shocked when people say 'oh it's ok it won't affect us'

I feel like screaming 'of course it will, its one world!'

I feel do, so sorry for the people of Japan and for all of us actually.

yanbu, I know exactly what you mean.

gordyslovesheep · 15/03/2011 21:23

YANBU goes hand in hand with people in a country with a welfare state, free education and free healthcare getting arsey about money going to poverty stricken countries in aid and charity - idiots

mumsgotatum · 15/03/2011 21:24

YANBU...it's shocking really.

I'm interested in how you think it does affect our day to day life in Britain?

curlymama · 15/03/2011 21:31

Maybe people say things like that because they are feeling relieved that it doesn't affect them. A kind of 'there but by the grace of God' type sentiment. It doesn't neccisarily mean they don't care. It does affect all of us, sort of, but people in Britain can hardly think that it affects them in the same way as people in Japan, or even in the surrounding areas.

I know I feel very grateful that I personally have not lost my home, my family, or even anyone I know through a natural disaster like this one. So really, I don't feel like it has affected me. That doesn't mean I don't care about what is happening to the Japanese people at the moment.

wannaBe · 15/03/2011 21:33

But on the other side you have people that make it all about them.

People that say they are worried/scared etc because of what is happening in Japan.

Fact is that these things are happening to other people, and no, we are not personally affected nor are we going to be.

It is equally wrong to turn this into our own personal tradgedy, because we can never even imagine what it is like.

So while I agree we should empathise with those in Japan, I don't think it's wrong to say that we've not been personally affected - in fact I think we should be grateful that we hav enot been personally affected.

It'll affect your day to day life from an economical point of view. Japan are large exporters of goods and that will impact globally too.
