Anything Well don't feel crap alone. I am a qualified Nurse and I have got 3 kids, and I have never sniffed ears or throat either. You learn something everyday. I have noticed they get fowl breath when they have a virus, so it makes sense. Clever idea.

grandmaagain · 14/03/2011 23:48

could it be colic is she drawing her knees up as she screams? are you sure she has brought all her wind up?

Anythingwithagiraffeonit · 14/03/2011 23:48

I've given her Calpol and she is desperately now gnawing on teething keys (not refrigerated though..)

Sounds like teething, has her sleep pattern altered?

Anythingwithagiraffeonit · 14/03/2011 23:51

Well.. NO naps today longer than five minutes and jolted awake and usually properly (after rocking and up once or twice) to sleep by 8.30 but it's.... 11.50! (Jesus!)

She sounds like a teether. :D With regard to smearing her bum with vaseline, with disposable nappies being so good, you don't need barrier cream unless they're already so. It can rub on the nappy and stop it being so absorbent. If you have iboprufen, alternate it 3 hourly with the calpol.

MrsBonkers · 14/03/2011 23:56

Do you have anyone with you?
Bear in mind that if you're stressed she'll pick up on it.
I didn't believe teething powders could work either, but they were great.
Something else I found worked was to dampen a bib with water and put in the freeze. Once frozen I let my DD suck it.

Yes, I have DH but I suspect we're both clueless :p

I don't have ibuprofen... I'll have to run out in the morning.

I hope this is a phase!!!!!

I find nurofen better than calpol for teething.

helibee · 15/03/2011 00:03

Is she still crying? As someone else said try distraction to calm her down and you may be able to tell better then if you think she's poorly or just teething. You are doing a great job.

Does she seem in pain? Rubbing the gums with your finger is definitely helpful. The nelsons teetha are good too. I'm not into many alternative remedies but they worked well with ds and meant less calpol.

Anythingwithagiraffeonit · 15/03/2011 00:31

Thanks everyone!!

I'm sort of managing to get her off to sleep now (half midnight!!!) by rocking her in the pram...

Good god being a mother is hard!!

Up to now it was mostly just very very tired but worth it! This new hard work was a shock to my system :)

trust your instincts Smile you really WILL know best what your baby needs.someone said that to me over 30 years ago when I was a new mum I did"nt believe it .....but it was trueSmile and will be for you too, you are doing a great job Smile

helibee · 15/03/2011 00:47

You are doing great, hope she settles soon ((hugs)).

nailak · 15/03/2011 01:04

i went tp the pharamcy to buy teething powder and the chemist said i would have a hard time finding it coz there has been a manufacturing fault? anyone know anything?

helibee · 15/03/2011 03:26

Nailak, there has been a problem at the Ashton & parsons manufacturing plant. Fwiw we always found the nelsons teetha to be more effective

silverten · 15/03/2011 09:22

On the homeopathic teething stuff: it does actually work to a certain degree, despite having no 'active' ingredient in it. It is basically lactose, which tastes nice- so will probably cheer your average baby up a bit. I would put in on a par with a nice chilled teether myself.

(my disdain knew no bounds when mr silverten wasted a fiver on homeopathic powders)

babybythesea · 15/03/2011 09:27

Hope she's ok. I don't have much to offer in the way of teething advice - it seemed to happen very late but very smoothly here. But I do know a bit about nappy rash (unfortunately).
If she's sore, then a bit of nappy free time can work wonders. Not easy, and you can only do it with good heating at this time of year, but it was the best thing for my dd when she got sore at that age. Just lay her on a changing mat and lots and lots of towels. Did lots and lots of towel washing but it did help. (And if she rolls in it, straight into the bath for a wash down). My dd gets sore very fast and starts blistering and bleeding so I had to do this a lot. For cleaning her, don't use wipes but cloth (muslins, maybe) and water, or if it's difficult to get off, into the bath and swill it off. The other thing I found is that different creams have different impacts. Sudocream is fine if she's a bit red, can prevent a flare up but is no good if it's already 'flared'. Bepanthen is good for medium-bad rash. If we've whooshed straight to agonising (by which I mean gritting her teeth, arching her back and crying in pain when I change her) then metanium is best. And when that fails, we go to the gp and get steroid cream. (After arguing with the midwife who says 'but nappy rash is normal' - maybe, but not for six weeks straight and with blistering and bleeding. Grrrr.)

Becaroooo · 15/03/2011 09:35

nurofen is better for teething then calpol IMHO, BUT you can stagger them whilst she is really suffering...so calpol, then 3 hours later some nurofen, and so on.....

My ds1 suffered horribly with teething. You - both - have my sympathies.

ds1 did used to like gnawing on biccypegs (sp?) I got mine from boots....they are very hard biscuit sticks for them to chew on.
