Cancel Comic Relief

CR cash goes to homeless and stuff in the UK and things in the third world, people only have a set amount of disposable income, right now if they are going to give it to anyone they would give it to Japan, so CR will make very little this year.

agree!!!

ballstoit · 14/03/2011 21:46

YABU. I'll manage to donate to both, just be a small amount. Problems here and in Africa cant be put on hold because of what's happening in Japan. Sad

Pancakeflipper · 14/03/2011 21:47

No they should not cancel. I am sure they will ensure monies are also allocated to Japan. I am hoping they make some announcement on Friday.

SnowdropsMakeMeSmile · 14/03/2011 21:48

I feel less inclined to give to Japan than to the Indonesia tsunami or to Africa now because japan is a very rich nation. Although their rebuilding costs will be sky high they have some chance of affording them themselves.

Which sounds terribly unsympathetic, of course I'm not. It's a terrible disaster.

MmeLindt · 14/03/2011 21:49

No, I don't agree.

I would expect that there are charities in UK who will already have "earmarked" funds from Comic Relief.

I will give to both funds.

hardhatdonned · 14/03/2011 21:50

YABU

Every charity needs supporting and Japan has its own economy and there will no doubt be an internation fund set up by the red cross to help out.

Grabaspoon · 14/03/2011 21:51

Yes what is happening in Japan is extreme and if we could we should try and donate towards the relief costs BUT child poverty/children caring for parents/ill children all living in England still deserve funding etc.

If I remember rightly from being a typist the last tsunami dealing with all the donations for the relief then - alot of money was raised and then a couple of months later I also dealt with the donations for sports relief and the money raised then was still a vast amount for what they then spent the money on.

YABU

bethelbeth · 14/03/2011 21:54

Can they at least cancel the crap TV that they insist on inflicting us with.

I would pay to not have to put up with Lenny Bloody Henry.

And before you say 'just watch another channel....'

There's never anything else on! Because noone competes with the almighty/shitty comic relief!!!!!

Get a DVD or record something. It's only an evening.

Bogeyface · 14/03/2011 21:56

YABVU

The earthquake hasnt stopped child abuse, children carers needing help, old people being abused/ignored in the UK or people dying of starvations, aids, malaria etc in Africa etc

As has already been mentioned, Japan is a rich country and will not need the same level of international aid as was needed in previous disasters in poorer nations.

squeakytoy · 14/03/2011 21:56

What is happening in Japan doesnt make life any less harrowing for those who benefit from Comic Relief.

Ihavewelliesbuttheyrenotgreen · 14/03/2011 21:57

I don't think that you can say one cause is greater than another. Suffering is suffering.

meditrina · 14/03/2011 21:57

The 1.7 billion people who are currently living in absolute poverty round the globe are still there, just as the disadvantaged in UK are still here.

I hope they won't be overlooked, their needs have not diminished.

MrsKwazii · 14/03/2011 21:58

I also think that people will give less to Japan as it is a rich nation - like with the New Zealand earthquake and the Australian disasters, appeals probably won't be as large/successful because those nations have the wealth and infrastructure to better cope.

I feel that donations are probably more needed in places like Haiti, which is still suffering from the after effects of the earthquake there, and Libya.

Comic Relief may not raise as much this year, but will hopefully still do well. Big Society and all that.

Ryoko · 14/03/2011 22:01

Japan may be a rich country but as any Western Otaku knows they are not that far behind America in the pay for yourself the state will not help department.

So even tho I only get about £35 a week in CB and TC I have donated a tenner to the cause because I think a disaster is kind of different and more urgent then people living in bad conditions that they all ways have done.

maybe thats wrong, maybe thats right, maybe I am getting soft since being a mum but all I can think of is the children after such a horrible event and if half my CB helps at least one traumatised kid thats a good thing.

YABU

There are many good causes and all of them are worthy. While I agree that people can't give to them all, I do think people are capable of deciding for themselves which ones they can and how much they can spare.

Even if they do make less than they might expect, every bt helps and the issues will still be there and need to be highlighted.

LaWeasel · 14/03/2011 22:09

There is no need to cancel, statistically people are more charitable in recession.

ChippyMinton · 14/03/2011 22:09

yabu.although horrific it was not unexpected and would have been planned for.

bethelbeth · 14/03/2011 22:10

A lot of Japan, especially some of the areas worst hit, could be described as 'shanty towns' in their build style.

I was quite shocked-considering it's considered a wealthy country that has always been prone to earthquakes (albeit smaller ones)

I just think they may be spending more then they get, thus rendering it pointless this time.

ChippyMinton · 14/03/2011 22:29

cr isnt just whats on tv though. its all the individual fundraising actions that add up and bring in the cash.

NadiaWadia · 14/03/2011 22:29

Just to say I don't get the Lenny Henry hate! I have always liked him - seems very genuine and a nice bloke.

hardhatdonned · 14/03/2011 22:31

Im awful it's not Lenny Henry i hate it's all the self righteous woe-is-us-we-need-money clips that intersperse the crap entertainment that annoy me which i do realise is horrendously shameful to admit!
