the nursery fed my 11 month old baked beans and rich tea biscuits?

Trying to find day care for my 11 month old is so hard! Not only the cost but also the availability - we are 200th on one waiting list so our little one will be 14 before she gets a place!
So, having found a place (and with my boss wanting me back fulltime asap) how "selective" should and can I be?
Are biscuits and baked beans ok as part of their "healthy meals" policy?
Is it ok that the planning, activities and resources seem to be lacking?
Should I just put her in for now and then keep looking for somewhere else?

Can't see the issue with biscuits and baked beans included in the menu.

Would be more concerned re the planning, activities and resources, they are a requirement of Ofsted.

Have you tried local childminders?

Together? That would be kind of gross.

chopchopbusybusy · 14/03/2011 19:30

Provided that's not the only food they're giving her it's not a problem. Nothing wrong with baked beans. A few rich tea biscuits won't do her any harm.

CrapBag · 14/03/2011 19:32

Its not a pile of sweets and cake all day. Chill.

SecretNutellaFix · 14/03/2011 19:32

As long as that isn't the limit of the menu, you should be fine.

noblegiraffe · 14/03/2011 19:33

Ask to see their menu. If it's all biscuits and beans and you would prefer something different, then keep looking. You might have to compromise in the end though.

squeakytoy · 14/03/2011 19:33

What on earth is wrong with baked beans?

Rich tea biscuits are hardly bad either.

Ormirian · 14/03/2011 19:34

Yes. They are OK. As long as it's not all they are feeding her!

plonkerr · 14/03/2011 19:34

YANBU!

Beans are much nicer on toast than they are on biscuits.

littlebylittle · 14/03/2011 19:36

Dd went to nursery one day a week. It was cake day! Lucky dd. By the way I didn't select the day on that basis!!

gizzy1973 · 14/03/2011 19:38

my lo would love that nursery as he seems to snack on rich tea biscuits all day + eats his meals as well

PigValentine · 14/03/2011 19:39

Euw, all I can think of now is the "A La Carte" kitchen advert from the 80's where the girl puts a jam roll on a plate with baked beans for her dad

PigValentine · 14/03/2011 19:40

And where do you live where there is a nursery with a waiting list of 200?!

FancyALittle · 14/03/2011 19:41

What, on top of each other?

judgejudie · 14/03/2011 19:42

how "selective" can you be???

well, its not as if its anything important is it, not like choosing a sofa or something

what could be the worst that could happen after all

cocoachannel · 14/03/2011 19:42

Wow PigValentine, there's s blast from the past!

KenDoddsDadsDog · 14/03/2011 19:42

Depends on the menu. DD has beans for tea about once a fortnight at nursery. And gets cake and custard once a week. But she also gets a good balanced diet there with plenty of fruit and veg so I wouldn't take issue with the odd treat.

MmeLindt · 14/03/2011 19:42

The baked beans and rich tea biscuits would not bother me, presumably that is not all they give the children.

What do you mean about the planning, activities and resources seem to be lacking?

AintMissBeehiving · 14/03/2011 19:48

Baked beans and Rich Tea - standard nursery fare and perfectly reasonable.

As for planned activities, well with an 11 month old you would be looking for activities that stimulate your child - messy play with sand/water/foam. Interesting toys with textures "heuristic play". Singing. Being outside. Painting. Baby signing. Role play. Cuddles and reading books. Treasure boxes. In a decent nursery the staff will let you know what's on the agenda that day (my nursery does it on a whiteboard by the entrance)

At that age I think it's more important that they are in a nuturing environment than the facilities that are available. After all a tray of water/sand keeps 11 month old entertained for a long while. If you don't feel comfortable then don't leave them. I wouldn't move nurseries, if you can avoid it but DS1 moved at 18 months (I changed jobs) and was very happy from the beginning at the new nursery.

mamatomany · 14/03/2011 19:54

I'd be looking at the overall menu and whilst baked beans and rich tea's aren't an issue in isolation they do introduce sugar to a baby that does not need it in her diet.
The one point to remember is you can always move them, I know people that have put up with all sorts of shit thinking the DC's are attached to the carers, love nursery etc, they don't they love mum and dad and as long as home is consistent move the baby as many times as you need to. However the perfect nursery/childcare arrangement simply does not exist, just try and get as close as you can.

Panzee · 14/03/2011 19:55

I really fancy beans and biscuits now.

NorthernGobshite · 14/03/2011 20:06

I think both are perfectly fine for your dc and are standard nursery food. Look at the overall variety of food on offer rather than 2 things.
