To be a bit irritated with friend?

Actually I think I am but I wanted to see what other people thought if they were in the same position.

My DS has a bit of an unusual name and I love this, apart from anything else you always know who's being referred to! However my friend has recently got a dog with the same name as DS! Now to be fair to her she didn't name the dog, the shelter did so I wouldn't ever ask her to change its name or anything like that. At first I found it funny but she keeps going on about it and saying things like 'we'll have to take them out together' which is starting to bug me a bit, maybe because it feels like my gorgeous little boy occasionally gets compared to a bloody dog (not a dog person btw)! Think its also because I feel it takes away a bit of his individuality (ok I KNOW thats being unreasonable).

Would anyone else feel a bit irked in my place?

Like you said, she didn't name it. Perhaps the name isn't that unusual? If it then it is a real coincidence so she will comment, then.the novelty will prob wear off.

GypsyMoth · 11/03/2011 16:47

er,no....bigger issues to worry about!

fedupofnamechanging · 11/03/2011 16:48

I'd also feel a bit irked, but have no idea whether I would be U or not. Sorry, not much help.

Don't let her see it bugs you, or she will wind you up even more

worraliberty · 11/03/2011 16:49

No not really, I think it's hilarious but that's just me I suppose.

Normally you find no matter how 'original' a name is, if it's a nice name it'll be quite common eventually anyway.

PrincessScrumpy · 11/03/2011 16:49

I love the name Phoebe and dh are struggling to decide if it's okay as our neighbour's dog has the same name!

I would just smile and change the subject, she'll soon get bored. Sounds a bit tedious for her to keep on though.

FollowMe · 11/03/2011 16:51

I'd have been peed off if shed named the dog but seeing as it came already named I'd say yabu!

MerylStrop · 11/03/2011 16:55

Get. Over . It

She's probably going on about it because she's a touch embarrassed by the situation. But honestly, how much time do you spend with your friend's dog?

Like I said I know i'm being a bit unreasonable because she didn't name it herself but just wanted to see if anyone else would feel the same.

I see her once or twice a week and in between I forget about it then when I see her she'll bring it up again or give me a knowing grin. Maybe thats it ninkynonker, the novelty has worn off for me but not for her!

Can't you just say 'I'm getting rather bored of these comments' and see if she takes the hint?

scurryfunge · 11/03/2011 17:01

Get a cat, name it after your friend.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 11/03/2011 17:02

I knew someone whose dog happened to have the same name as my DS - not a friend as such, but as the boys were friends we'd chat in the playground a bit and when picking up from each other's houses.

His name isn't unusual really, just one of those solid, slightly old-fashioned names that are always around but never seem to be common.

Neither of us ever expressed more than a mild amusement - would have thought it weird and irritating if she'd done more than that.

I have a son called Oscar- 'nuff said.

ajandjjmum · 11/03/2011 17:08

I have a Max - we've hit the same situation - but without the friend thinking it's super-funny.

pinkhyena · 11/03/2011 17:13

Ah damn bluddymofo you've caught me out! My DS is called Dexter and is NOT named after the serial killer. Got a bit bored with those comments too lol.

My DH's family have always had dogs called Charlie. I happen to LOVE the name Charlie for girls (Charlotte). Wouldn't put me off one bit. In fact I think it might help the Grandparents to remember my DC's name!

squeakytoy · 11/03/2011 17:18

well thats what you get for calling your kid Fido I suppose Grin

DurhamDurham · 11/03/2011 17:18

I think I can see where you are coming from. My niece has the same name as our neighbours dog. my SIL seems to get v wound up by it whenever she comes to visit. Not sure how I would react as it hasn't happened yet. Having said that, my dd2 is best friends with another girl with the exact same name. It can get v confusing.

Still, better than a dog!! Grin Grin

oldwomaninashoe · 11/03/2011 17:20

Well as someone who had a cat called Kevin Grin

For a while one of my work collegues thought that Kevin and Bobby were two of my children, the penny dropped when I spoke about taking Kev to the vets !
