to think INVITE for INVITATION grates on me.

I dont give a damn about grammar etc on mumsnet. No intention of cramping anyones style..

But it does grate on me when a newsreader
says "Have you had your INVITE yet?"

I would say INVITATION in that context; but the evidence of wordy news geezers seems
to be against me.

It will always grate on me, even if someone with a degree inEnglish tells me its correct.

I remember there was this big thing about it because there was this street (haven't a clue what it was called!) and at one end of the street, the street sign had an apostrophe, and the one at the other end didn't!

YANBU. It's not that difficult to say a word with four syllables instead of two.
