to shave the cat?

just come in to a load of white clumps on new red rug (again) cat is very lovely but turns into a complete bastard if you try and keep on top off his semi-long fur with daily or whatever grooming. He was a rescue cat, so I can't really moan - it's his only fault!

I heard some where it's common practice in Florida to shave your cat (not bald, just short obv!) and seing as spring is here......

Having just bathed my cat and gotten torn to shreds by his killer claws i would say YABU the cat will annihilate you

supadupapupascupa · 09/03/2011 16:05

yes YABU. You have a lovely white fluffy puddy cat and you ant to shave it????

Maybe it was a previous owner who tried to shave him that made him hate grooming in the first place

Desperateforthinnerthighs · 09/03/2011 16:05

Dunno whether YABU or not but would love to see you keep the cat still long enough for you to do itHmm

Joolyjoolyjoo · 09/03/2011 16:07

YANBU! We shave lots of cats (although we call it de-matting!)because they have horrible matted fur BUT good luck to you trying to do it with the cat awake! If he doesn't like grooming, he's going to like electronic clippers even less, be warned!

Oh, and try not to nick his skin- lots of cats and dogs brought in by shamefaced owners with flaps of skin hanging off over the years Wink. Use proper clippers, maybe get your vet to show you- good luck

OTheHugeManatee · 09/03/2011 16:07

I wish I could do that to DP's linty dressing gown. But shaving it would sort of defeat the object.

If you decide to try and shave the cat, please video it and post a link. Once you get out of hospital, I mean.

ladyfirenze · 09/03/2011 16:13

i'm kidding myself aren't i? although i do have doggy clippers and other kit, as i do mobile dog grooming

supa dupa - also, it is playing havoc with my slimming black wardrobe (no longer black, and a bit minging. he sneaks onto my bed when i'm out, and when i wake up in the morning, my lips are coated with his fur. oh, and once i had a single long white hair wrapped round my fucken eyeball. for two fucken days!

we took the cat to the vets for a de-matting cos she is soooo fat she can't wash her hind legs/back and we were a bit lax (ok, lots) with grooming her. we were told that as she was of a delicate disposition (a little wary of strangers) they would have to put her under and then do it but she was so scared when it came to doing it she didn't move a muscle.
She still hasn't truly forgiven us and that was over 2 1/2 years ago!

midori1999 · 09/03/2011 16:17

I am thinking of getting mine clipped actually, but the vet would have to do it under sedation I think. She's a Ragdoll and beautiful, so it seems a shame, but due to also being a recue, she hates being brushed and also turns from a soppy, lovely thing into a killer cat. It seems daft to put her through the horrors of daily grooming if there's another way.

Also, I live in hope that once she is clipped she'll object to brushing less and we can gradually get her used to it.

Ormirian · 09/03/2011 16:18

Well when you do please video it and stick on you-tube so we can all have a laugh at your attempt! Grin

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 09/03/2011 16:18

The cat will kill you. It will end up with a zig zag bald stripe up it's back and you will end up retrieving your lips from behind the sofa.

MadreInglese · 09/03/2011 16:21

ladyfirenze I've also had the long white hair in my eyeball, I nearly retched as I pulled it out!

fortunately our long haired mog enjoys being brushed, but we (DP) do occasionally have to clip his back end as he seems to be less efficient at removing clumps as he gets older

supadupapupascupa · 09/03/2011 16:23

HAHA! I'm loving this (and missing my two dreadfully RIP)

Honestly tho, I would put a throw over everything you don't want covering in cat hair, invest in a dyson and grin and bare it.

I do have sympathy as I've been there......

If it's matted then get the vet to shave by all means

ladyfirenze · 09/03/2011 16:24

mine is also a rag doll! right i'm off to make a video.....

Have you tried those things that have little rubber bits instead of normal bristles?

LessNarkyPuffin · 09/03/2011 16:27

Like this

olderyetwider · 09/03/2011 16:28

You could wax it, would last longer and is fashionable for pussies

Lulie110 · 09/03/2011 16:32

In all seriousness, I bought one of THESE the other day for my 2 cats and it really is great - takes away a lot of those soft downy hairs. It was another MN recco actually and I want to pass on the recco. Obv only works if your cats will accept being combed.

ladyfirenze · 09/03/2011 16:33

yep lessnarky. got full grooming kit plus extras. the cat has no patience is really the issue. starts off reasonably, so it's not frightened of the brush, but there's a substantial amount of dead hair. it's not matted, but he get's tetchy at first - ears back, that sort of thing, and then he gives a couple of warning yowls. I would usually stop then, cos otherwise he starts to use his teeth to stop me!

oh yes, try to shave your cat.

Then come back and tell us how it went.

Of course, that may take a while, because you'll be typing with your nose since the cat will have taken both your arms off. Grin

ladyfirenze · 09/03/2011 16:36

i'm not sure how i'd tackle the belly area..... it's easier on a dog

Crawling · 09/03/2011 16:40

Grin Grin please please report back after you have done it op.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 09/03/2011 16:42

I occasionally shave the worst-matted bits of cats with them awake, depends how long they will put up with it Grin Thing is, you could end up having to shave the cat piecemeal, so that by the time you get to the last bit of cat, the original bits have grown in again...would certainly be interesting -looking!
