Every day i go to my Gym and cycle there and park my bike on one of the bike lock rails.
Without doubt there is always a person who comes under there and lights up.
I feel like telling them its not a smoke awning for Smokers.
Its for people to lock there bikes up in.
When ones comes out of the Gym feeling healthy its horrible to have to stand there unlocking your bike, and putting on crach helmet, coat gloves, (which takes time ) whilst inhaling piles of smelly cigarette smoke.
AIBU ?

Worraliberty . . ."Put your. . . . ..and bugger off" ????
Disgusting ! so rude .

Surely these kind of threads are meant to ask a simple question, and they do not ask for people to be rude.

Bumperella its a figure of speech silly. I didnt say i hate these people. . . . I dont hate smokers as people (as if)....
what i am saying it i dislike the behaviour of smokers under the bike shelter . Surely you understood that.?

Yes smokers cost the NHS millions. . .but if they want to smoke and die of it thats up to them.

Mnetters who smoke. . .you know who you are, so carry on !
Personally I would rather cycle to the gym and cycle back.

But people (or very few at least!) jsut aren't as vitriolic about other "nasties" and expects applause / acceptance.
The opening post didn't say "all smokers are terrible human beings and I ahte them all" and am not trying to say otherwise, honest!
BUT it astounds me how accepted it is GENERALLY to be incredibly awful about smokers ("they" "always" drop fag ends everywhere, "always" smoke around vulnerable folk, skive off work every 10 mins for a fag break, cost the NHS a fortune and should therefore be allowed to die rather than be treated for medical conditions, have an extra head... you get the idea!).
But hardly anyone would say the same sorts of things (as enthusiastically using as strong language, and as unashamedly) about obese people, or alcholics, or other addicts.

OP - YANBU

Fabby-'I smoke and have never needed any hospital care and Im 46.' Hmm

Ermm I didnt see rudeness in Worra's post, just a suggestion of how you could avoid spending more time than you have to under the shelter. I think the "bugger off" was referring to leaving on your bike not an insult, as in "I'll do my shopping and bugger off home" or whatever!

Sensitive..much?!

Deciduousblonde · 11/03/2011 10:16

I think it's something like 7 Billion paid to the government from smokers taxes and around 2 Billion spent on smokers diseases.

Yes, the NHS probably couldn't cope without the revenue!

As for the OP, of course YANBU..you have every right to dislike people smoking in the shelter, but you aren't there very long.

Emmanana · 11/03/2011 10:34

The total amount of money raised by taxes on tobacco annually in the UK is £10 billion.

The estimated amount for the healthcare of smoking related diseases in £3 billion.

Added to which, a higher number of smokers will not reach full life expectancy, and so will not cost the Government by way of pensions and social services provision.

So are you BU to 'hate' smokers and judge them? That's only something you can answer yourself. If you need to find people to agree with you, in order to justify this point to yourself, then go ahead. If you need to judge people and make scathing sweeping statements, in order to feel superior, then be my guest. Your words say more about you than they do about other people.
