Went to harvester, was told I couldn't have any hot water to heat DD's bottle. I wouldn't have minded but she wouldn't have needed one if we hadn't had to wait twenty minutes for a waitress, another 20 for drinks etc!

Then to softplay in Caterham, they wouldn't even let me use the microwave!

Then the restaurant by chessington zoo said I couldn't heat the bottle, I would have to stand at the bar and do it, but DD wasnt allowed at the bar...

It just means that we can't have days out! I always have to disappoint people in leaving halfway through something so I can get DD home for a feed.

It's very very annoying, and I just can't understand what the problem is??! They should all be child friendly! Softplay for heavens sake!

Tommee Tippee actually do a travel bottle warmer so your bottles will definitely fit.

nenevomito · 09/03/2011 13:00

Moto services are really baby friendly and have bottle warmers.

I used to take out water in a Thermos and powder, so I could make it up myself, or do what another poster said and keep it down my cleavage for a while.

BellBookandCandle · 09/03/2011 13:01

I thought Ambivalent was being ironic..............feeding babies in public by whatever method can sometimns be difficult. We don't live in a child centric (or at timnes a child friendly) world it seems

TandB · 09/03/2011 13:01

Ambivalentaboutmarmite - clearly the OP is already formula feeding her baby. Please explain, in those circumstances, how your comment was remotely helpful and anything other than an attempt at a spiteful little dig.

I am not at all ambivalent about marmite - I find it unpleasant. I am also not at all ambivalent about you after that comment.

BalloonSlayer · 09/03/2011 13:03

Bloody hell how long does it take to warm up in your cleavage?

Chynah · 09/03/2011 13:05

Never bothered warming bottles for either of mine (or food when out) made life much easier.

atmywitssend · 09/03/2011 13:09

I never heated bottles, DS always had it at room temperature and cartons when out and about. Makes life much easier.

springbokdoc · 09/03/2011 13:09

I'll guess I'll have to go down the flask route.

dixiechick1975 · 09/03/2011 13:10

My kit was a flask with a large plastic lid - fisher price? pour water into lid and put bottle into water to heat. Used those single serve cartons of formula.

At baby massage (no hot drinks allowed so flask a no no)I used to fill a bottle with hot water put in advent insulated bag and when feed time came tip formula powder into bottle (used an advent pot thing to hold correct amount of formula)

Never asked for bottle heating. Due to cirs had lots of hols/days out with DD as a baby.

PipCarrier · 09/03/2011 13:12

anything I haven't had time to read all the posts so don't know if anyone has answered your question about the bottle warming flask...the fisher price one doesn't fit the tommee tippee bottles, they're too fat for it. You need this:

It's brilliant, used mine loads for DS1. HTH.

This doesn't keep them warm small.

You need the little milk container things too, then you can either make the feed up using the water from the flask, or add the milk from the container into a bottle of cold water (filled at home from cooled boiled water) and then sit the bottle in the hot water flask until it's at the desired temp.

Alternatively you could use a ready made carton in the bottle and then sit that in to heat up.

Honestly it's brilliant, probably one of the most used and worthwhile things I bought.

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 09/03/2011 13:19

Pipcarrier - amazing! Thanks...

I'm going to walk to mothercare and get it as soon as DD wakes up!

I second the flask of hot water idea, I have the Tommee Tippee one here and its excellent.

I didn't buy the fisher price one because the tommee tippee closer to nature bottles don't fit in it according to the helpful lady in mothercare.

I put hot water in it at home, put my powder in these dispenser pots and then I make up the feed as I need to.

If the water is still too hot I ask for cold water in a jug to cool it down. Never had somewhere say I can't have cold water, had millions of places say the can't give hot water or heat a bottle up.

CinnabarRed · 09/03/2011 13:24

Pipcarrier - that's not recommended anymore. You shouldn't ever make up powder formula with water less than 70 degrees because the powder itself isn't sterile, and once it's made up you have to use it within 2 hours.

I used the sterile 1-feed cartons, but stored them in the waist band of my trousers so that they were body temperature when I needed them! Blush Worked brilliantly. Less bulky and more hygenic than a bottle down the cleavage....

compo · 09/03/2011 13:26

I used to buy formula in cartons when we were out
never heated it up
they always drank it

TinkyWinkyLovesPo · 09/03/2011 13:29

Compo My first would drink the carton stuff at any temp and was very obliging but my second would not drink it if it wasn't warm, at all, such a pain.

MsScarlettInTheLibrary · 09/03/2011 13:34

Well it's amazing my DD ever made it with all the rules and reg surrounding making formula up.

I just made up all the bottles with boiling water then put them in the fridge. When going out I'd put one in my bag along with an empty bottle and a carton. She'd have the made up bottle first then the carton.

Only ever warmed a bottle if I was at home and took it straight from the fridge. Just to take the chill off.

BelieveInLife · 09/03/2011 13:42

Then you would use it the other way I've suggested cinnabar if you're concerned about that :)

hazeyjane · 09/03/2011 13:46

I have bottle fed 3 babies, and have never had a problem with this! Sometimes they won't microwave it, or give you a jug of water, but if you ask them, they should take it into their kitchen and sit it in water for you until it is warm.

To all the people saying,'just give it to them at room temp' some babies just won't drink it unless it is warm ds has terrible silent reflux, and screams blue murder if the milk isn't warm.

If you still have trouble can you take out a flask of >70 degree water, and a bottle of cold water, make up the formula with the hot (ie 7 scoops in 3 oz of water, then add 4oz of the cold) then the water will still be prepared correctly and also be warm.

PipCarrier · 09/03/2011 13:50

The guidance was the same when I used to do it cinnabar but it didn't do mine any harm and I will be doing the same again this time round.

Does anyone actually make up a fresh hot water bottle each time and wait for it to cool?! Noone I know does and that's pretty much impossible in the early days when you're getting into a routine and feed times vary slightly. More doable once you know feeding times and can let the bottle cool in time.

If you're really worried about that though just take a carton and heat it up in the warmer.
