Ok this research/call centre been calling me several times a day...each time I say politely 'No thank you I don't want to take part in market research' I then hang up as they don't seem to understand the word 'No'!

Their number is withheld and they have never given me the name of their company but I think it is in India as accents are not english ever.

Other day they called again...they sometimes don't even talk when they call (now i have had abusive ex be violent to me so paranoid it is also ex sometimes which also freaks hell out of me when no one talking on other end)...I can sometimes hear the noise of other callers making their calls...so I say 'Hello' 'Hello' 'Who is there' several times....I put phone down, pick it up they are still on line so I can't dial out....what if I needed to call ambulance as ds been having seizures?

After 30 minutes I lost my rag and started to screm'get off my f@@@ing line now I need to phone 999!'. I put phone down pick it back up they are still on line...I scream again' I need to phone an ambulance get off my line'....puts phone down...picks phone up still on line grrr!

Two hours later I check then eventually line is free! How do I stop this telephone harrassment!

Keep a whistle by the phone and blow that down the handset when you know who it is.

I got loads of these calls last year and started up a few months ago, I went on a website and checked them out they are basically looking to get your details of all your providers so they can sell the info on, they usually have really strong indian accents but are called Karen, Paul, Mary.....

I started asking them what their name was and where they were based, and what their weather was like, then started droning on about the weather here, then when they started telling me they could save me money I told them I was a service researcher and everything I had was the best deal, and maybe I could advise them, then I told them that they had phoned me 15 times in the past month and went onto discuss the waste of their time ....they couldn't get off the line quick enough and stopped phoning.

You can register with tps, and buy a handset that has a different ring for calls from abroad. Then don't pick up calls from abroad. Friends calling from overseas leave a message and you can ring them back.

i usually find that clearing your throat and going " FUCK OFF" at a high level of decibels usually has them hanging up pretty quickly....

I always ask how they got my number (was once told "Yellow Pages" Hmm) then ask them if they realise I'm ex-directory, ex-192 and TPS registered, usually it's enough to get them off the phone if they don't immediately apologise I add that it's illegal to be calling me which usually speeds them on their way.

Love some of the suggestions here!

I once answered the phone at my parents house and made out my parents were elderly and I wouldn't pass anyone onto them who didn't have an appointment to call as it upsets them. They were actually 45 and 55 at the time!

Slightly different but when my aunt died, Grandma called up BT to cut her line off "Sorry maam, but we can only talk to the account holder" "But she's dead" "But we're not authorised to talk to anyone else" I think Grandma asked if they'd like a medium. I remember Mum had a similar call with someone, eventually she asked if they'd like an address "Plot 534, Blah-blah cemetery..." the person on the other end was quietly repeating as they typed it up and had typed it up before they realised what they'd typed. "But that's a cemetery!" "Well I told you they were dead and asked if you wanted an address" Grin
