AIBU to think that some people have a pretentious view of MN

Dont get me wrong, I love this site! But I saw someone type this on a random thread, and it sums up my thoughts perfectly...

"And finally, I think that people need to stop seeing mumsnet as all great and powerful.

It's a website. It's a chat forum. It's information which we choose to access. It is a facility that we use. It is not Life, The Universe And Everything"
(I hope you dont mind me quoting! I wont name you, just in case... :))

MN is a website. And not just a website, but a business that (at the end of the day) is run for profit. The company itself is not responsible for righting the wrongs of the world. If individuals or groups of posters choose to, that is fine, but why assume that MNHQ share the views of all of us? After all, 90% of the time we dont agree with each other!! Grin

So, I've been brave typing this and now I think I'm gonna hide! Does anyone agree with me??

My mother (who doesn't use this site) and I had the same conversation the other day. I was commenting on how everything we say is regurgitated on Radio 4 and she said;

"You have no idea how much of a powerful lobby group it is".

It is just one place to give an opinion-no one generally asks in RL. You are a bit deluded if you think anyone pays any attention!

fatlazymummy · 08/03/2011 09:13

I totally agree with the OP. It is just a website, one of many. It's not even my favourite one personally. It is free and I like the fact swearing isn't filtered but other than that there isn't too much to recommend it for me.

goodbyemrschips · 08/03/2011 09:16

I recommend it to friends, because what some people type is quite astonishing.

I don't believe anybody serious would take anything wrote on here serious.

SeeJaneKick · 08/03/2011 09:18

God people are naive! Are you aware how much MN is quoted in the newspapers and on discussion programes??

goodbyemrschips · 08/03/2011 09:20

I do read a lot of rubbish in newspapers.

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/03/2011 09:20

A thread about a thread? And quoting someone else? Bad form.

You may not like it, but MN has become a very powerful voice. You are perfectly within your rights to see that as pretentious, but that is how it is. Why else do you think MN was invited to Strasbourg? For the biscuits?

HecateTheCrone · 08/03/2011 09:25

bandwagon.

There is no real power.

MN will be dropped as fast as it was picked up.

If it had real power, that would not happen.

Wait and see.

I will be back to post "I told you so" on this thread in a few months Grin

goodbyemrschips · 08/03/2011 09:25

To add I agree with the poster nothing ever written on here will change the world.

Lots of people get invited to Strasborg but don't make a wiff of difference.

allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 08/03/2011 10:31

Not a thread about a thread..?

Hec , I thought you might agree Grin

I really don't think we spend more time talking about bumsex than parenting do we?

Grin
allsquareknickersnofurcoat · 08/03/2011 10:42

Lol, well I guess there is a lot of talk of the parenting skills of others... Wink
