to give the dc 2 cooked meals a day?

My children have a 2 course cooked lunch at school, and most days have seconds, and sometimes thirds.

In the evening they also have a 2 course cooked dinner for 3 reasons
a) my dh and I haven't had a cooked lunch so am cooking for us, so no prob to cook for them as well
b) they are starving, so would eat rubbish if not a full meal
c) we all sit round the table to eat and its nice to have the family time.

However, having chatted to other parents at the kids school we appear to be in the minority, and it was seen as odd that they should eat 2 cooked meals a day.

(Just as a note, they are both on the border of underweight/healthy weight, so certainly can pack the extra calories away)

my DS1 gets hot lunch at school and then cooked dinner at home - seems perfectly reasonable to me. DS2 is at nursery and has a snack but has hot lunch at home with me (usually soup and sandwich) then has cooked dinner with DS1 and me....

ddubsgirl · 07/03/2011 22:48

when mine had school dinners they still had a cooked meal at home too.

I don't think it's wrong at all to have 2 cooked meals, if it's all healthy stuff it doesn't matter if it's hot or cold.

I think a lot of people see school dinners as a way of getting out of cooking a proper meal for the DC in the evening, but it certainly won't harm your kids to have 2 meals a day.

YANBU at all. When I was at primary school I had toast and cereal for breakfast, went home for a two-course cooked lunch with my mum, and teatime was also a cooked meal, followed by bread and then cake if we'd eaten it all. That was followed by supper before bed, generally sandwiches and a glass of milk. None of us (I have 3 sibs) were even remotely fat.

Some days my DC have full cooked dinner (eg shepherd pie/lasagne), other days just have soup & toast (I guess that's cooked too) or dipping eggs (also cooked).

What do you mean by a non-cooked meal?

FabbyChic · 07/03/2011 22:51

Does it matter what others do, if it suits you and the children eat it, whats the problem?

receiverofopiniongiver · 07/03/2011 22:53

Non-cooked - snack like sandwiches, toast, cereal etc.

Cooked - meat and 2 veg Grin

mine would have eaten the dog if they didnt have a cooked meal in the evening too!but then school dinners never filled them,no 2nds at their school :( but as said by others for some kids school hot meal is the only hot meal they get.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 07/03/2011 22:56

Oh OP... do you only do two courses then? We do 5... Grin

FunnysInTheGarden · 07/03/2011 22:59

and why eat with the DC when eating with DH, avec vin is so much more fun?

receiverofopiniongiver · 07/03/2011 23:00

We'd have to talk to each other - so much better when the children are there to break up the silence Wink

Tbh it depends on what the cooked and uncooked is. You say sandwich- but a wholemeal bread with cheese and good quality ham with some tomatoes, raddish, salad etc on the side is a healthy meal- if nly because raw veggies will not have lost most of their vitamins in cooking. Healthier than crappy chicken nuggets and mash.

So while a supper of Coco Pops is definitely not healthy, there are lots of great uncooked alternatives.

Btw we have hot meal 6 nights out of 7 at the moment, but as the spring and summer comes, we will definitely be having more salads etc
