How many questions?

Do i really have to answer them all? I thought they just needed to know who lives here not the hundreds of nosey questions they ask

Baffledandbewildered · 07/03/2011 23:44

Oh forgot eldest at uni too. So many people to do it for my arm will drop off and I won't even be home.

I'm guessing with all the number crunching computers that the "visitors" bit will tally up with the form that was filled in where they usually live - and it'll give some idea of movement around the country

constantlywrong · 07/03/2011 23:55

I think it's intrusive that we're force to do it, under fear of legal repercussions. I just don't like it

But constantlywrong, on the most basic level, surely it's important to count how many people are in the UK? Otherwise how does the government know how much money to allocate to say - healthcare in Devon versus healthcare in Liverpool. You might think that there are roughly equal numbers of people in place A and place B, but if you don't formally count them you can't work out an accurate allocation of resources.

I do think it is also quite important to collect and keep this sort of information for statistical purposes - to monitor the changing demographics of the country, and so that in 100 years historians will have access to accurate information about the population as it is now. They might be equally amazed that we have "IT consultants" and "shop assistants" as we would be looking at all the footman, maids and stableboys from our grandparents/great grandparents age!

Why do they need to know the name and address of where I work?
