to hate "salary will be negotiated according to skills and experience"

Give me a ball park figure or top and bottom end of the range at least. It's not unreasonable to want to know this before putting my time into the application, is it?

I know in theory you should be able to work it out but back in the real world I see jobs being advertised as requiring a degree AND experience but with a starting salary of 13k.

YANBU. They are hedging their bets instead of being upfront. They should be able to say what they are offering.

vickibee · 07/03/2011 15:54

I agree, employers at the moment are taking advantage of a surplus of candidates and salaries are being squeezed. Usually they ask you to put your current salary on the form so they have an idea of what you are expecting.

It takes a lot of time and effort to complete some forms

Eglu · 07/03/2011 15:56

YANBU. A range for the salary is a reasonable expectation from an advert.

nomoreheels · 07/03/2011 16:37

I hate that too. I've put lots of time into applications, got an interview & then get the "oh, we can only pay £X" when I was £10k above that in a similar role.

A waste of everyone's time. At the very least they should have a salary discussion when they're offering interviews...

mayorquimby · 07/03/2011 16:38

I think yabu, they obviously don't want to give away any of their leverage for the impending negotiations.

LadyBiscuit · 07/03/2011 16:40

I agree with you - it's wasting your time if they don't at least give a range.

lookatmewhenImtalkingtoyou · 07/03/2011 16:43

I also hate the ones that ask you how much you would expect they will be paying

nomoreheels · 07/03/2011 16:45

This only happens in private sector roles of course, charities etc all have clear bands & grades.

For me they now sound a warning sign of a company hoping to get something for (as close to) nothing as possible, & I don't think I would bother applying anymore.

MrsH75 · 07/03/2011 16:53

YANBU

I think it should be illegal to advertise any job without putting a salary range. Why waste your time applying if it's going to be a job you can't afford to take? It's not like job applications take ten minutes is it?

tyler80 · 07/03/2011 17:30

I suppose it's a good indication of employers to steer clear of.

In primary teaching it's 'A TLR may be available for the suitable candidate'. Basically they're saying we may pay you more for taking responsibility for a subject. Now if I'm a literacy co-ordinator and they already have one I don't want to apply do I? If they want a maths leader I might not be a suitable candidate. Plus TLRs vary massively in what they are worth, I'm not interested in a 2.5k one if I'm already getting 5k am I. Further, 'may be available' - I don't want 'maybe', I'd only bloody apply if you're offering one!

I avoid these jobs unless I have inside info. Sometimes it means 'we can't recruit because our school is shit/ has serious issues and we'll pay you extra to 'manage' sweet FA as we're so desperate and it's the only way of offering more pay'. That's fine we me, I can manage behaviour, but tell me or I won't apply.

foreverondiet · 07/03/2011 18:50

I am now in my 5th job since leaving university, and apart from the graduate one, none have advertised salaries. All have required CVs, the agent had told the recruiter how much I am getting and how much to expect and if its been about right I've had an interview.

TBH it would never occur to me that there should be a salary range! The salary really does depend on how they recruit.

On balance though I think its ok if a CV application (candidate would have CV prepared anyway) less ok if you actually have to fill out an application form due to the effort required.
